Invasive predator fish that can live out of water for days to be hunted in Central Park

By Tracie Strahan, NBCNewYork.com

Environmental officials are planning to survey a Central Park lake this week to search for an invasive type of toothy predator fish that threatens to disrupt the ecosystem.

The northern snakehead fish, native to China, Russia and Korea, has been spotted in Queens in recent years, and one was quietly observed in Harlem Meer several years ago.

The fish eats frogs and crayfish and has the ability to breathe air and live for days out of water in certain conditions.

It is so disruptive that the state prohibits possession, sale and transport of the live fish and its eggs.

Signs have recently gone up around the Harlem Meer warning anyone who catches one not to throw it back.

The signs warn anglers to "secure the fish" and "keep it in a secure container until it is picked up by officials."

If park officials cannot be found at the boathouse, the sign urges anyone with a snakehead fish to call 311 and report the catch.

The sign is "just to let people know that this fish is in there, if you find it please do not return it to the water and it also helps people become aware that there are things in the water that should not be there," said Melissa Cohen, Department of Environmental Conservation fisheries manager.

The man-made lake is located in Central Park's northeast corner between 106th and 110th streets.

Musical of 'Rocky' heading to Broadway

NEW YORK (AP) ? It's been a knockout in Germany. Now Sylvester Stallone hopes a musical based on his beloved boxing film "Rocky" will also be a hit on Broadway.

Producers said Sunday they plan to get "Rocky" up and punching at the Winter Garden by February following a successful debut in Hamburg last fall.

Based on the Oscar-winning 1976 film, the musical features a score by "Ragtime" veterans Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, and a story by Thomas Meehan, who wrote "The Producers" and "Hairspray."

Originally written in English but translated into German for its world premiere and billed as "Rocky: Das Musical," the show is produced by Stallone and Stage Entertainment USA.

"The reason I think it has worked so well there and why I think it'll work on Broadway is that, yes, it's a story about boxing, but the real story is actually an intimate, powerful and gritty and moving love story between two people who are both lonely and in a difficult place in their worlds," said Bill Taylor, managing director of Stage Entertainment USA. "They rescue each other. It's very uplifting."

The musical stays close to the film, which charted the rise and romance of amateur boxer and debt collector Rocky Balboa, played in Germany by Drew Sarich. No casting has been decided for New York.

In the story, Balboa, nicknamed the Italian Stallion, gets his shot against undefeated heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, played in the film by Carl Weathers. He also woos a love interest, Adrianna "Adrian" Pennino. Stallone wrote the screenplay and it won the best picture Oscar in 1976.

The film made famous the image of Balboa running up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the quote "Yo, Adrian!" The German production kept the trumpet-laden funky theme "Gonna Fly Now" and the anthem "Eye of the Tiger," written for "Rocky III." Both will also be in the Broadway version.

The director is Alex Timbers, who directed Broadway's "The Pee-wee Herman Show" and directed and wrote the book for "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson." The boxing choreography is being done by Steven Hoggett, who choreographed "American Idiot," ''Peter and the Starcatcher" and "Once."

"This is not boxers doing a kick line," Taylor said. "It's stunning movement representing some of the sparring and the fighting. It's very, very cleverly created."

"Rocky" will be the first new tenant at the Winter Garden Theatre in years. The show that's been there since 2001, "Mamma Mia!," is transferring to another Broadway venue.

The musical will follow two other boxing-related works to appear on Broadway recently: Mike Tyson's one-man show about his life in and out of the ring, and a revival of Clifford Odets' "Golden Boy" about a young man torn between his natural talent as a violinist and the fast money of boxing.

Facebook And The Sudden Wake Up About The API Economy

api branchesWhat a two weeks it’s been. Something happened that has been simmering for a while. The API market exploded. Intel bought Mashery for more than $180 million and CA acquired Layer 7. 3Scale received a new $4.5 million round of funding from Javelin Ventures. Programmable Web acquired Mulesoft. And then Facebook jumped in and bought Parse. The acquisitions and funding point to a maturing market that is reflected in the ubiquity of APIs across the application landscape. It’s not a new market by any means. The space is filled with companies that have leveraged the API build out that has happened over the past several years. Instead this is an inflection point. There are more than 30,000 APIs, according to Programmable Web, the leading API directory and blog. Javelin Ventures Managing Director Noah Doyle said to me in an interview that analysts see the API market growing five to ten times over the next five years. With that scaling in number of APIs comes a virtuous circle for the developers that build compelling apps and APIs. The APIs extend the apps reach as they become part of distributed data network. As more people use the APIs so the app developer generates more data. As the data increases in scope, often the service will become an API. Facebook needs new streams of data to keep rolling out new digital products. Back end as a service providers like Parse provide SDKs and APIs that give developers access to infrastructure for storing basic data types, locations and photos. How Facebook uses this data is a question mark. But regardless, Pare serves as a constant replenishing source, nourished by the apps on the Parse platform that use APIs. Facebook now will decide how to package and segment that data to push more relevant advertising to its 1 billion users. APIs Are Like Glue APIs will be the glue to the Internet, said Programmable Web Founder John Musser. Musser, like Doyle, sees a new generation of APIs emerging that are fueled by demand, triggered by mobile devices, which serve in many respects as the new client/servers. Apps are hosted on cloud services and distributed across mobile devices that read and write data, sending and receiving information, connecting via APIs. In the first generation, Mashery and companies like Apigee pioneered the API management space. Twitter and other web companies emerged in the second generation. In the

Google Now available on iOS devices starting today

Google Now available on iOS devices starting today

When it comes to major news, we didn't expect to hear much from Google in the run-up to I/O, but clearly, the company just couldn't wait that long. Google Now, a service that Android users have enjoyed for a year, just became available on iOS devices in the form of an update to the Google Search app, confirming those leaked videos we saw a few weeks ago. It won't have integration with notifications or alerts at launch -- it may come in a future update, but the company wasn't willing to divulge its future plans -- so you'll need to enter the app and swipe up to refresh your list of cards. The iOS version won't have every type of card that you'll find on Android, either: boarding passes, activity summary, events, concerts, Fandango and Zillow aren't included this go-round. Improvements and additional features will likely trickle in over time, but it's certainly better than nothing for iOS fans who've looked at Jelly Bean users with a slightly jealous eye. We've included Google's blog post in its entirety below, and you can jump to More Coverage to download the app.

Skinny Huawei smartphone shows off 6.2mm profile in Chinese certification

Unknown Huawei P6-U06 smartphone shows off 6.2mm profile in Chinese certification

The FCC isn't the only agency playing with devices we don't even know exist, and its Chinese equivalent has recently had some hands-on time with an unknown Huawei smartphone, codename P6-U06. Luckily, there are a few pics and specs to accompany the filing, which tell us it weighs 120g (4.2 ounces) and measures 132.6 x 65.5 x 6.18mm (5.2 x 2.6 x 0.2 inch), meaning it could be the super-slim P series handset a Huawei exec hinted at in January. It didn't materialize at MWC, but the same exec promised more was to come in 2013, possibly starting with this P6-U06.

Those dimensions house a 4.7-inch TFT screen at 720p resolution, quad-core 1.5GHz processor, 2GB RAM, an 8-megapixel camera on the back and an unusually large 5-megapixel sensor in the shooter up front. Unsurprisingly, Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean is listed as the OS, while GSM / WCDMA radios suggest Asia as the target market (not to mention the Chinese certification). That's all we've got on the P6-U06 for now, but in lieu of official press shots, the handset strikes a couple more candid poses after the break.

Amanda Bynes Shaves Her Head (Photos)

Well look who just pulled a Britney Spears? Amanda Bynes shaved her head, well half of it anyway and shared the photo with her millions of Twitter followers. Is it me or is she really getting into the whole Twitter thing? Amanda continues to shock us all and her latest incident involves her shaving half of her head. Her decision to pull a Spears, as I like to call it, came after she received some serious criticism from the media regarding her not so great looking extensions. I have to admit they did look a little ridiculous. So what does one do if you kept getting ragged on for your looks, you change it. In Amanda’s case that meant only shaving part of her head and creating a very unique and interesting look. As she posted the pic the actress had this to say about her new hair do. I buzzed half my head like @cassie! No more old photos! This is the new me! I love it” This is not the first time the actress has shaved her head. In fact earlier this month Bynes took to Twitter, her outlet for venting and letting those that are against her [...]

Bombing suspects' mom in terror database

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. intelligence agencies added the mother of the Boston bombing suspects to a government terrorism database 18 months before the bombings, two officials told The Associated Press. She called it "lies and hypocrisy" and said she has never been linked to crimes or terrorism.

The CIA asked for the oston terror suspect and his mother to be added to a terrorist database in the fall of 2011, after the Russian government contacted the agency with concerns that both had become religious militants, according to officials briefed on the investigation. About six months earlier, the FBI investigated Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his mother, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, also at Russia's request, one of the officials said. The FBI found no ties to terrorism.

The revelation that the FBI had also investigated Zubeidat Tsarnaeva and the CIA arranged for her to be added to the terrorism database deepened the mystery around the family. The Tsarnaevs are ethnic Chechens from southern Russia who immigrated to the Boston area in the past 11 years. Tsarnaeva, a naturalized U.S. citizen who has appeared on television interviews since the attacks and reversed her decision to return to the U.S. after the bombings, has said her sons could never have been behind the deadly attacks and believes they were framed.

The officials spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to speak publicly about the ongoing case.

Tsarnaev, who died in a gun battle with police last week, and his younger brother, Dzhokhar, are accused of carrying out the bombings. Officials said that before he was advised of his constitutional rights to remain silent or consult a lawyer, Dzhokhar admitted to FBI interrogators that the brothers committed the bombings and that he was recruited by his brother to participate only a week or two before the attacks.

Previously U.S. officials have said only that the FBI investigated Tamerlan. But in March 2011, the Russians asked the FBI to look into Tsarnaev and his mother because of concerns they were religious militants who planned to travel back to Russia, the official said.

The FBI found nothing to link either person to terrorism, and the FBI closed the investigations in June 2011. Then, the Russians in the fall sent the same warning to the CIA. The CIA asked the U.S. National Counterterrorism Center to add the mother's and son's names to its huge, classified database of people known to be terrorists and those who are suspected of having terror ties, called the Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment, or TIDE.

Being in that database does not mean the U.S. government has evidence that links someone to terrorism. About a year ago, there were some 745,000 names in the database. Intelligence analysts add names and partial names to TIDE when terror-related intelligence is shared with them.

Tsarnaeva said it would not surprise her if she was listed in a U.S. terror database.

"It's all lies and hypocrisy," she told the AP from Dagestan. "I'm sick and tired of all this nonsense that they make up about me and my children. People know me as a regular person, and I've never been mixed up in any criminal intentions, especially any linked to terrorism."

A search of U.S. criminal records showed only that Tsarnaeva was arrested in June 2012 in Natick, Mass., on a shoplifting charge over the theft of $1,624 worth of women's clothing from a Lord & Taylor department store. She was arrested and charged with larceny over $250 and two counts of malicious or wanton property damage. Tamerlan had traveled to Russia in January 2012 and returned in July.

Tsarnaeva accused U.S. law enforcement of killing her elder son.

"They are already are talking about that we are terrorists, I am terrorist, they've told that I was doing something terroristic," Tsarnaeva said.

Some lawmakers in Washington have questioned whether the FBI adequately investigated Tsarnaev and his mother in 2011. Over the course of that year, the FBI reached out to Russia three times for more information, U.S. officials said. The first time was in March 2011, when they received the initial tip from the Russians. The second was in June 2011 when they were preparing to close the investigation. The third time was in the fall of 2011 after the CIA received the same tip from the Russians.

One of the officials said the FBI never found the type of derogatory information on Tsarnaev and his mother that would have elevated their profiles among counterterrorism investigators or would have formally placed them on a terror watch list.

(AP) ? Playing on a sprained left ankle, Stephen Curry has the Golden State Warriors on firm footing in the playoffs.

Curry overcame his latest ankle injury to score 29 points, and the Warriors outlasted the Denver Nuggets 110-108 on Friday night to take a 2-1 series lead.

Curry also had 11 assists, Jarrett Jack added 23 points and seven assists, and Harrison Barnes and Carl Landry each scored 19 points to help the Warriors rally from 13 points down in the third quarter. Golden State still had to sweat out Andre Iguodala's missed 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded, setting off a gold-confetti celebration throughout the announced sellout crowd of 19,596.

"Feels good. Just thankful to be able to get through the game without any incidents," Curry said.

Ty Lawson had a career playoff-high 35 points to go with 10 assists, and reserve Corey Brewer scored 16 points as Denver dropped its second straight game ? and its grip on the best-of-seven series.

Game 4 is Sunday night in Oakland.

"There was a lot of good tonight," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "I told the team after the game, 'The process of the NBA playoffs is to get better. We got better tonight. We didn't win tonight. But there's a process going on, and it's just two wins. They're only halfway there.'"

The teams traded spectacular shots for most of the game, especially in the closing moments.

Curry crossed over Kenneth Faried, then dropped in a high-arching lefty floater. Curry added another on the next possession ? only with his right hand, and this time hitting almost all net to keep the Warriors up four.

Faried, who finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, followed with a reverse layup. A few plays later, Curry stole the ball from Andre Miller from behind and then nearly dropped in another floater as Wilson Chandler fouled him. Curry's free throws gave Golden State a 108-102 lead with 1:54 remaining.

After Denver called timeout, Lawson's layup over Draymond Green started a three-point play. Denver got a stop before Lawson's 3-pointer hit the front iron and Curry corralled the rebound ? but then missed a layup on the other end.

Twice given a chance to either tie or take the lead, Denver blew both.

Iguodala got caught in the air trying to make a pass, Jack batted it away and hit 1 of 2 free throws for a 109-105 lead with 21.5 seconds to play. Chandler stunned the crowd with a quick 3 from the corner, the Nuggets covered Curry on the ensuing inbound and Jack was called for a rare 5-second violation.

Klay Thompson and backup center Festus Ezeli trapped Lawson off a pick-and-roll, and Lawson dribbled the ball off his leg and out of bounds under heavy pressure. Officials confirmed the call with a video review.

After Barnes made just the second free throw, Denver inbounded the ball to Iguodala. He took a few dribbles and heaved a shot from around half-court, hitting the front iron and letting the home fans exhale.

The Warriors outshot the Nuggets 52.5 to 46.5 percent and won the rebounding battle for the third straight game, 42-34.

Golden State followed its 64.6 percent shooting performance ? the highest in an NBA playoff game in 22 years ? during its 131-117 win at Denver on Tuesday night with another gem befitting the Bay Area's basketball party.

Ushers and parking lot attendants greeted fans with "welcome to the playoffs." Almost every fan wore a gold shirt read "We are Warriors" on the front, and the 33rd straight sellout that packed Oracle Arena often yelled so loud even players had a hard time hearing whistles.

"I've never seen anything like it," Jack said.

Curry, who wore a large white brace around both ankles, made 8 of 17 shots and often provided reason to cheer in his first home playoff game. Warriors coach Mark Jackson said he didn't know if Curry had taken, or would take, a pain-killing injection as the guard suggested he might for the first time in his career.

No matter.

Jackson stuck with his smaller lineup for the second straight game since David Lee went down with a season-ending tear of his right hip flexor. Guards Curry, Jack and Thompson started alongside small forward Barnes and center Andrew Bogut, who had nine rebounds and six points and was a constant paint presence.

Karl countered with an even smaller lineup for Game 3: forward Faried started at center in place of struggling big man Kosta Koufos, Chandler was at power forward, Iguodala at small forward, Evan Fournier at shooting guard and Lawson at point guard.

The athletic Nuggets constantly swarmed Curry and Jack ? or whoever dribbled off pick-and-rolls ? with double teams as soon as they crossed midcourt, forcing Golden State into 23 total turnovers. Even with all the aggressiveness from both sides, the defensive nuances never slowed the frenetic and flamboyant pace.

Every time Curry lined up to shoot, the crowd's collective inhale could be heard. The silence was usually followed by a remarkable roar ? and until the final quarter and a half, often by another avalanche of Denver offense.

After going down by 13 points early in the third quarter, the Warriors answered with a 16-2 run capped by Curry's 3-pointer near Denver's bench. The shot gave Golden State a 74-73 lead and sent owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber jumping out of their courtside seats, screaming, clapping and motioning to the stands to shout even louder.

The Warriors outscored the Nuggets 33-18 in the third quarter.

NOTES: Bogut was called for a technical foul in the third quarter after a verbal exchange with Denver's JaVale McGee. ... McGee grabbed his right shoulder when he was fouled in the first quarter. He grimaced in pain but stayed in the game after a timeout. He had four points and one rebound. ... Lee was in a suit and often engaged in the huddle.

Serbian lawmakers vote to support Kosovo deal

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) ? Serbian lawmakers have overwhelmingly supported an agreement normalizing relations with breakaway Kosovo, a potentially landmark deal that could end years of tensions between the Balkan antagonists and put them both on a path to European Union membership.

Parliament backed the deal in a 173-24 vote Friday. The agreement drew support from the parties of the ruling, nationalist-led government and the center-left opposition. A pro-Russian, nationalist party was the only group that voted against the deal.

Parliamentary backing is a boost for the Serbian government, which reached the agreement with Kosovo this month in Brussels, but has faced pressure from nationalists and Serb hardliners in Kosovo's divided north, who rejected it.

Serbia has refused to recognize Kosovo's 2008 declaration of independence.

Drunk Frenchman pulls toy gun on Berlin police

BERLIN (AP) ? A Frenchman visiting Berlin probably couldn't have picked a more dangerous spot to pull a pretend pistol.

Police say the heavily drunk tourist kneeled down in front of Germany's biggest synagogue Thursday and pointed what appeared to be a gun at officers guarding the building.

Luckily for him, a quick-witted policewoman noticed that the weapon was a toy before her colleagues opened fire on the Frenchman.

Berlin police spokesman Dirk Stoewhase said the unnamed 25-year-old man could have ended the day in the morgue instead of a jail cell.

Stoewhase said the gun might easily have been mistaken for a real weapon because "it certainly didn't just look like a water pistol."

Jewish buildings in Germany are routinely guarded by armed police to prevent anti-Semitic attacks.

Dow slips, S&P edges up as durable goods, Apple drag

By Caroline Valetkevitch

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Dow dipped while the S&P 500 edged up on Wednesday as a sharp drop in durable goods orders last month added to worries about slower economic activity and Apple's results disappointed investors.

Shares of Amgen dropped 6 percent to $106.03, weighing on the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 a day after the drug company reported first-quarter sales below analysts' expectations. The S&P 500 healthcare sector index <.spxhc> fell 1.2 percent and was the worst performer among the S&P's 10 sectors.

Helping to limit losses, Boeing jumped 3.4 percent to $91.13 and gave the biggest support to the Dow after the aerospace company reported earnings that beat expectations. Boeing shares rallied despite concerns about the company's 787 Dreamliner.

The market's mixed day followed gains so far this week. The S&P 500 is still up 10.8 percent for the year despite a fairly weak month so far.

Adding to market weakness, March U.S. durable goods orders slid 5.7 percent in March, the government said, marking the biggest decline in seven months. The March drop was slightly more than twice the 2.8 percent decline forecast by economists polled by Reuters.

"That doesn't surprise me a whole lot. People are maybe starting to feel the pinch of the payroll tax that took effect in January," said Bryant Evans, portfolio manager at Cozad Asset Management, in Champaign, Illinois.

Evans said it's more evidence of slow economic growth in the United States, which may likely continue the rest of the year.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was down 21.33 points, or 0.14 percent, at 14,698.13. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was up 1.60 points, or 0.10 percent, at 1,580.38. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was up 0.25 of a point, or 0.01 percent, at 3,269.58.

Procter & Gamble Co , another Dow component, fell 4.8 percent to $78 after the biggest U.S. household goods manufacturer issued a profit outlook that was below expectations. It was the stock's biggest drop since January 2009, and contributed to a 1.1 percent drop in the S&P consumer staples index <.splrcs>.

Defensive shares, however, have led the S&P 500 index's gains so far this year, which has underscored views that economic activity remains painfully slow.

Digital Storm's Latest Gaming PCs Are Almost As Cheap As DIY

Every time I post a review of a boutique gaming PC, someone in the comments has to mention that they could build a similar machine themselves for less money. That's still true for Digital Storm's newly-launched Vanquish line of gaming PCs, but it's a narrow truth ? we're talking $20 to $60 narrow.

Digital Storm's more expensive systems can run upwards of $8,000. Those premium systems are for hobbyists with money to burn. Then there's the Bolt, a custom-engineered slimline system aimed at people looking to pay a premium for a small footprint.

The Vanquish line, as far as I can tell, is for people that just want a damn gaming PC. It's a box with a window that runs computer applications and games, the only concession to flash a pair of red LED lights in the bottom of the case. Inside there are name-brand components, exactly the sort of name-brand components you can purchase at a place like Newegg.com.

In fact, to prove their price point, Digital Storm went ahead and priced out each of the four Vanquish models as parts at the online retailer's website.

S

The low-end Vanquish is $38 more than parts. The high-end, which I've been trying out for the past week, is $58 more. That's $58 worth of assembly, testing, warranty and lifetime tech support. As far as I'm concerned, Digital Storm made its point right there. I don't even know why I was sent a system to try out for the past week. Maybe they wanted me to make a video.

Not quite as comprehensive and informative as their own, but I'm just a guy sitting in front of a computer desk, asking it to love me.

S

I could discuss performance, noting that the Intel Core i7 3770K 3.50 GHz processor and the Nvidia GeForce GTX 6600 Ti, while not my first choice of CPU and graphics card, did an admirable job of playing the games I'm likely to be seen playing these days. It ran Tomb Raider on ultra at 68 frames-per-second, BioShock Infinite at 82 and Shogun 2: Total War at a respectable 64 on highest settings. It's not a machine meant to break land-speed graphics records, but it's a damn fine starting point with plenty of room to expand. It's exactly the sort of system I would build if I still had the time or inclination to make my PC gaming a little more personal.

I could also show you this really cool picture of the cooling pipes bathed in red LED light.

S

Digital Storm's aim with the Vanquish line is to end the age-old DIY Vs. pre-built debate. It will not do that, not because it doesn't deliver what it promises, but because folks that build themselves PCs can always go to eBay or one of the hundreds of discount online stores with websites from the late 90s and find bargains. The Vanquish will not likely silence them.

What the Vanquish can do make those that would rather not build their own PC an excellent system backed by warranty and support that feels like a system they could have put together themselves, because they certainly could of.

The Vanquish line is available for purchase now at Digital Storm.

This week Nvidia released its latest high-tech graphics card, the GeForce GTX Titan. The? Read?

4 Steps to Help with Baby's Transition to a New Caregiver ...

By Tracy G. Cassels

One of the hardest things a parent can do is leave their baby in the hands of another.? Even when that other is a family member.? Passing off your baby for any reason can be difficult, and when that time frame has to be extended (like for work), it can be even harder.? Part of that comes from the fact that it is quite common to hear of parents telling awful stories of their babies screaming for them as they left.? The return at the end to find out their baby screamed for hours until finally stopping.? Caregivers will reassure them that it will pass, but for many, we worry about what is happening to the trust between our children and ourselves.? Some children will adapt quite readily with little to no problems, but some struggle and often we get a sense of this (as parents) well before we?re about to leave our children for extended periods.? This can cause a lot of stress for us and for our children.

What can we do?? Here I?m going to provide four steps that parents can take to help babies transition into someone else?s care for any extended period.? [These suggestions may not work for all, especially if a baby is experiencing strong separation anxiety and at that point, each family has to decide what is best for them while considering their needs and the needs of their baby.]? These steps assume that either you have a caregiver in home or a considerate daycare which will allow you to spend the better part of possibly up to a few weeks helping your child to transition.? Not all daycares will allow this (sadly).? If you have a child that struggles with separation, you?ll want to consider this when looking for a daycare when possible.

Step #1: Shared Exposure

One of the most important steps to making your child comfortable is ensuring there is shared exposure between the caregiver, yourself, and your infant.? As this person becomes a stable presence in your child?s life, s/he is more likely to feel comfortable with them when you aren?t around.? Of course, the time it can take for this to happen varies by child, so the sooner you can start with that, the better.? Feedings are one of the ways in which you can help this transition, especially if the caregiver will be feeding your child.? If you are nursing but will be expressing, while you are there you can see how your child takes to the other caregiver actually doing a feed (by cup or bottle), even if you need to start with you holding your child and the caregiver doing the feeding (or vice versa).? Other things that help: having the caregiver there while you change your child and eventually having them do the change while you?re present, having the caregiver hold your baby while you?re there for as long as your child will allow, and letting the caregiver try to soothe your infant for a minute before returning your child to you while you?re there offering vocal support.

Step #2: Short Leaves Within Earshot

The next step is to try to transition away for short periods where you remain in earshot of your baby while explaining to your child that you are just going to the other room and you?ll be right back.? You want to gradually build this time up, but remain responsive to your child?s cries for you.? Start with as little as five minutes (and working in shorter intervals if needed) and try to leave the caregiver (who your child is hopefully comfortable with by now) and your baby together while you leave the room.? If at any point your child cries for you, return and comfort your child and wait a while (at least half an hour) before attempting to separate again.? You can increase the intervals in times that feel comfortable for you and your child, but I would recommend going up no more than 5 minutes at any given day.

Additionally, you?ll want to build up the time it takes for you to come back if your child gets upset.? At first you should return immediately.? Your child needs to build up the knowledge that you will return and you are there for him/her.? However, as you?re extending your time away, you can start to wait one minute to see if the new caregiver can offer comfort during this time away.? You don?t, however, want to leave more than a few minutes before returning as the negative experience with the caregiver can make the process of bonding between them much harder.? One recommendation is to chart the times and keep track of how long you can take away in the house.? Note that you may see some ups and downs in this as your child adapts ? don?t fret.? Just because your child was fine for 10 minutes one day and then 5 the next doesn?t mean you aren?t making progress, it?s a bump in the road, that?s all.

Step #3: Short Leaves Outside

Once you can go 30 minutes without your child calling for you inside, you should start to take leaves (or have your child and caregiver takes leaves if it?s a nanny/family member at home situation) outside.? This means you may not be able to return immediately if your child is upset.? Explain this to him/her.? It doesn?t matter how young, if you get in the habit of explaining these things early, it will help serve you later on, and if your child is old enough to understand even partially, you?re helping.? Some children will do better being in a different environment with a new caregiver while some will prefer the same environment (i.e., home).? You?ll have to see how your child does and make arrangements that fit with his/her needs in that regard if that is a possibility.

Once again you want to build up with this, but starting at 30 minutes (where you left off in the inside case) and going up.? This allows the caregiver time to work towards calming your child if s/he becomes slightly upset.? I would strongly recommend that you have a phone on your or way to reach you.? If your child becomes hysterical, it?s best to head to him/her straightaway ? let the new caregiver put you on the phone with baby to explain you?re coming right away.? If this happens, don?t go out again that day, save it for the next day, but remain with the caregiver for an extended period after, letting your child calm down and become reassured in the caregiver?s presence.? Again, you may have periods of up and down, but the best thing you can do for your child?s sense of security and anxiety is respond when they need you.? You?ll want to build this up to around half the time you?ll be gone for work before moving on to Step 4.

Step #4: Long Leaves But Ability to Return Quickly

Once you can go half the day with few problems, you can try to double that for the full day.? However, the caveat here is that you return quickly if something goes wrong.? Make sure you aren?t an hour away, but rather 10 minutes away (or so) so that the caregiver can reach you should your child become upset.? The key at this stage is to make sure you can be responsively quickly to your child during these long absences.? Eventually you won?t be able to regularly do this so you need to build up that sense of security in your child at this stage.? Additionally, your child will learn that the caregiver is willing and able to get mom or dad when absolutely necessary which can help build trust between the two of them.? But at the end of this stage (which may not take long or may take a week or so), your child should feel secure and confident with their new caregiver and secure and confident that you as a parent are still there for them and can be there when they absolutely need you.

***

The main point during this transition is to follow your child?s lead with respect to offering comfort and to avoid stepping them too far out of their comfort zone.? They will already be forced to take a step away from what is most comforting for them, which is normal (after all, that?s what developing any skill involves), but going too far out of that zone too quickly can be traumatic.? Allowing the child to take the steps needed towards being comfortable in a different environment can go a long way towards making the caregiving situation optimal for everyone.

I will reiterate here that I realize this isn?t possible all the time.? Or even necessary.? Some children simply adapt much faster than others and will take a few days to get used to someone new.? Great!? This is for those children that aren?t there.? However, the problem of it being possible is the larger issue.? Daycares often don?t want parents hanging out and many have the erroneous belief that children will settle quickly are fine, but we know that?s not actually the case with many children showing increased stress responses in daycare environments for extended periods, even after they have stopped crying[1][2].? Notably children with secure attachments don?t show these stress responses when a parent is present during the transition periods, but does show them once the parent has to leave (in these studies it was 3 days of transition).? This is why the longer transition period can help.? If you can, search for a daycare that can provide this or a nanny who can offer this type of transition if needed.

The other problem is that many families simply don?t have the time to employ these four steps as they do take an extended period of time.? This is predominantly an issue in the US where leaves can be as short as 6 weeks (or shorter).? There?s just no time to bond and then transition.? In some ways, children this young will adapt to other caregivers very quickly and the impetus thus becomes finding a great caregiver.? The vast majority of daycares in the US are not good, sadly, and will not provide the type of one-on-one attention young infants need.? The other side to this is to fight for longer leaves, something you can read more about here.

Regardless of your situation, the most important thing is to find a caregiver you trust and who treats your child with love and respect.? That will most likely mean having to call you during the early stages, but that is part of what transition is and helping your child to know you are there when needed.? There are excellent caregivers out there, they just may take a bit of looking!? Good luck!

Obama's Fmr. Chief Economic Advisor On Bitcoin's Usefulness: ?Hahahaha. ROTFL?

url3Eighty-seven percent of the nation’s top economists think that the digital currency, Bitcoin, has “limited usefulness.”?Given the growing popularity of the enigmatic currency, the University of Chicago conducted its famous Initiative on Global Markets (IGM) poll of?38 of the world’s top economists, to see how experts felt about its longterm future. By far the best response came from the former Chairman of the President?s Council of Economic Advisers, Austan Goolsbee, who simply wrote, “Hahahaha. ROTFL.” Bitcoin is a digital currency designed by an anonymous programmer that is produced by “miners” who contribute expensive computing power to solving the mathematical puzzles necessary to bring more of the scarce currency into existence. Early speculators and anarchy-friendly buyers gave the crypto-currency an early boost, eventually earning it mainstream acceptance at popular websites, including the home of lonely netizens, OkCupid. Even after?months of wild swings?in value (from $205 to $105 during one day), more and more shops are starting to accept bitcoins alongside dollars.?(for an awesome explanation, see the Colbert Report video below): The Colbert Report Get More: Colbert Report Full Episodes,Political Humor & Satire Blog,Video Archive The Colbert Report Get More: Colbert Report Full Episodes,Political Humor & Satire Blog,Video Archive It appears that the nation’s top economists don’t have the same faith in Bitcoin as the proprietors of the online dating service. The overwhelming majority surveyed felt that Bitcoin’s crazy fluctuations will inherently “limit its usefulness.” Former editor of the prestigious American Economic Review, Judith Chevalier, wrote: “Unlike government issued fiat money, there is no guarantee it can be used to pay taxes or settle other obligations.” Of course, the expert crowd wasn’t unanimous. Stanford’s Caroline Hoxby wrote: “First part is right: value derives from belief others want to use it for trade. Second part is not obvious: beliefs could stabilize or not.” While this isn’t a glowing endorsement of the nascent currency, it’s worth noting that economists occasionally have difficulty predicting events, such as the massive recession that almost tanked the global economy. Still, people are investing their own money in Bitcoin. Question is, do you want to bet against 87 percent of top economists?

News in Brief: Comet's water still hanging around on Jupiter

Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9?s multiple fragments left dark scars in Jupiter?s upper atmosphere when it collided with the planet in 1994 (shown in this photo from July 1994). Now it turns out the planet has hung onto water that the comet provided.

Credit: Hubble Space Telescope Comet Team and NASA

In July 1994, the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 plowed into Jupiter, and the comet fragments triggered dark scars of debris in the giant planet?s atmosphere that were visible for weeks. The comet also left behind a more permanent deposit: millions of gallons of water. Water from the impact still makes up at least 95 percent of the water in the planet?s upper atmosphere, researchers report April 23 in Astronomy & Astrophysics.

Telescopes had previously spotted water in Jupiter?s upper atmosphere, some 100 kilometers above the planet?s ammonia cloud tops, but those surveys could not determine where the water came from. So astronomers used the European Space Agency?s Herschel Space Observatory to create a high-resolution map of water vapor distribution throughout Jupiter?s atmosphere. The researchers, led by Thibault Cavali? at the Laboratory of Astrophysics of Bordeaux in France, found that the concentration of water peaked in the planet?s southern hemisphere, right in the region where the comet struck.

More water also appeared at higher altitudes around the planet, which Cavali? says supports the comet as its origin. Water from other sources such as Jupiter?s icy moons would likely spread out more evenly around the planet and would gradually filter down to lower altitudes.

How to Punch Hard and Fast: Martial Arts Lessons | Content for ...

Author: Andrew Toth | Total views: 47 Comments: 0
Word Count: 979 Date:

Q: What is the best way to develop speed in Kung Fu?

A: Practice slow!

When I first started martial arts training I was allowed to practice one punch, and one punch only, for a very long time. They put me in the "beginners class" and one punch was all I was shown and one punch was all I was allowed to practice. When I "graduated" from the beginners class I was of course shown other techniques.

"Graduation" was by invitation only; it did not depend on a pre-determined set of criteria and of course you could not buy your way into the advanced classes. You had to wait until the teacher considered you were ready and that could take a short time, or a very long time. You just never knew when the invitation would come?or if it would come!

Astute readers will see immediately that the beginners class was a test of commitment: traditional teachers are not going to waste their time on browsers and tyre-kickers. You have to demonstrate a level of commitment to the class before they in turn make a commitment to you.

But the beginners' class was more than just a test of commitment: it was an important part of the training. Learning to focus all our energies on one single punch was an invaluable skill that would stand us in good stead in the months and years to come. But I did not understand that, at the time. I simply did not understand why we were required to practice only one punch, and that only slowly.

Young as I was, I was bursting with impatience. Slow practice was boring. I wanted to learn all the "moves" and I wanted to do them hard and fast. I wanted to beat Bruce Lee in speed and power!

But slow practice?

Hey! That was for the other guys. I was going places. I did not have time for slow practice.

But I hung in there and the reason I hung in was that my teacher was blindingly fast. I had seen him in action and his punches seemed to erupt out of nowhere, and of course I wanted to be like that.

Anyone would, right?

And I was willing to bet that my teacher had practiced ? fast!

If you want to be fast, you must practice fast, right?

But the first thing to do in martial arts is to throw away whatever you think you know about martial arts because the martial arts, especially the traditional variety, are replete with paradoxes. Your expectations more often than not simply get in the way.

Practicing hard and fast, for example, will get you quick results. Your muscles will bulge and your punches will kick like a mule, but?

And it is a big BUT?

Your punches will be inefficient. They will never be as good as they could be and, worse, the punching power will decline with age because it is strength-based.

Let's take a closer look at this: when you first practice a punch it is not "clean". That is, the muscles do not co-ordinate properly and often work against each other. Moreover certain groups of muscles resist the punch and inhibit it, which means you have to use far more strength than necessary because you have the additional burden of overcoming the inhibition. And that is not efficient.

Worse, if you practice hard and fast you tend to strengthen not only the correct muscles, but also the inhibitory muscles. In other words an Arnold Schwarzennegger clone may have big muscles but relatively little punching power because while one big set of muscles are performing the punch, another big set of muscles are inhibiting the punch.

These inhibitory, or antagonist, muscles are triggered for two reasons: one, there is a natural fear, especially in Western societies, of hitting someone (fear of consequences, for example) and this activates the antagonist muscles which hold you back. And two, the antagonist muscles are the body's natural defense system so that you don't damage your own arm whilst punching. For example, without the antagonist muscles coming into play you might dislocate your shoulder or elbow because there is nothing to hold the punch back.

In other words, the antagonist muscles do have a legitimate function, but care must be taken not to give them too much scope because they will hold you back ... and that is why you need to practice slow. If you practice slow the antagonist muscles do not have to come into play, because the body does not need to protect itself and so the end result is that you are strengthening your hitting power, but not strengthening the inhibitory muscles.

This leads to efficient punches because when you do have to strike hard and fast, there will be only the minimum necessary re-action by the inhibitory muscles and so you can operate at optimum speed.

There is more to it than that, a lot more, but suffice it to say for the moment that practicing slow allows you to practice relaxed and you can move fast from a relaxed position. Practicing fast, however, tends to tighten the muscles and this inhibits movement. In other words there is a lot more resistance to overcome if your muscles are tight and tense, and that will slow you down.

In conclusion I urge the practitioner, especially the younger ones, to guard against impatience. That will be your biggest enemy, bigger than any you will find on the street! Impatience will interfere with your technique more than anything I know.

A Daily Can of Soda May Raise Diabetes Risk

Drinking just one 12-ounce soda a day may increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes, a new study from Europe suggests.

In the study, people who drank a 12-ounce sugar-sweetened soda daily were 18 percent more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes over a 16-year period compared with those who did not consume soda. And people who drank two sodas daily were 18 percent more likely to have a stroke than those who drank one; those who drank three sodas daily saw the same risk increase compared with those who drank two, and so on.

The results held even after the researchers took into account risk factors for Type 2 diabetes such as age and physical activity levels, body mass index (BMI) and the total daily calorie intake.

The findings agree with earlier studies in the United States, which found daily soda consumption increased the risk of Type 2 diabetes by 25 percent.

However, the study found only an association, and cannot prove soda consumption causes Type 2 diabetes. It's possible other factors not accounted for by the study influenced the disease risk. In addition, participants answered questions about their diet just once at the study's start, and it's possible they changed their diets over time, the researchers said.

The researchers analyzed information from about 12,000 people who developed Type 2 diabetes between 1991 and 2007, and a randomly selected group of about 15,000 people, most of whom did not develop diabetes. All participants were taking part in a larger study looking into the interaction between diet, environmental factors and the risk of cancer and chronic diseases conducted in eight European countries.

People who drank one or more glasses of sugar-sweetened soda a day were about 30 percent more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than those who drank less than one glass a month.

Because the link between sugar-sweetened soda and Type 2 diabetes was independent of BMI (an indicator of obesity level) and calorie intake, this finding suggests that other factors, such as the spike in blood sugar people experience when they drink soda, may play a role in the risk, the researchers said.

People who drank diet soda were also at increased risk for developing Type 2 diabetes during the study compared with those who drank no soda. However, when the researchers took into account participants' BMI and total energy intake, the increased risk disappeared. This finding suggests that the link between diet soda and diabetes risk was driven by participants' weight: People who are obese, and thus already at risk for Type 2 diabetes, tend to report higher consumption of diet drinks.

Healthy food choices (such as eating plenty of fruits and vegetables), daily exercise and weight loss can help prevent Type 2 diabetes, or slow the progress of the disease in those with prediabetes, according to the Mayo Clinic.

The new study is published today (April 24) in the journal Diabetologia.

Pass it on: Consumption of sugar-sweetened soda is linked to an increased risk of Type 2 diabetes.
