NFL free agency: John Abraham reportedly has offer from Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals have reportedly offered free agent defensive end John Abraham a contract.

The Arizona Cardinals have made an offer to free agent defensive end John Abraham, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. Abraham visited with the Cardinals on Wednesday, and the visit must have gone well.

Abraham has been a tough nut to crack in negotiations. Several teams have shown interest in him this offseason, including the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos, but Abraham has had an asking price that teams are unwilling to meet for the aging pass rusher.

Abraham may be getting older -- he's 35 this season -- but he's still productive. He notched 10 sacks in 2012 while starting all 16 games for the Atlanta Falcons. The prior two seasons, Abraham notched 9.5 and 13 sacks, respectively, so it's not as though there has been a steady decline.

Which likely speaks to just how high his asking price has been. Abraham previously stated that he wanted $12 million per year on a multi-year deal, and went so far as to suggest that even if he was playing "terrible," he would still want at least $5 million per year.

With Arizona, Abraham would be an outside linebacker given the 3-4 alignment, though it's hard to imagine him dropping back into coverage at this point in his career. Lorenzo Alexander and Sam Acho are the top outside linebackers at the moment, so there's definitely room for Abraham, provided they use him to his strengths.

Federal public service pension board executives' earnings rise by ...

OTTAWA ? The five top-paid executives at the Public Sector Pension Investment Board, a federal Crown corporation, were awarded more than $16 million in total compensation for the 2013 fiscal year ? a roughly 50 per cent increase over the previous year ? as the organization posted record investment returns, reveals a new report.

The eye-popping payouts to executives at the federal organization ? which invests funds for the federal public service, Canadian Forces and RCMP pension plans ? come as the Conservative government lays off thousands of federal workers, reforms the public service pension plan and digs in its heels on contract negotiations with some federal unions.

Investment board officials note, however, the organization does not receive a budgeted annual appropriation from government like some Crown corporations, and is a self-sufficient entity that operates from the returns it earns from pension plan investments. The income earned by the investment board is allocated to federal pension funds to pay off the obligations owed to plan members.

The board?s 2013 annual report shows the total compensation awarded to the five highest-paid executives totalled about $16.3 million ? almost 50 per cent more than the $10.9 million awarded in 2012.

?These awards fairly reflect our current pay-for-performance approach,? says the report, tabled this week in the House of Commons.

The pension investment board, following a compensation review, has subsequently approved changes that will, going forward, reduce the maximum potential payouts to senior executives.

Gordon J. Fyfe, board CEO, was paid $5.3 million in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013, including $500,000 in base salary, more than $1.7 million from the short-term incentive plan, and $2.4 million from the long-term incentive plan.

He was also awarded almost $520,000 from ?restricted fund units,? more than $35,000 in benefits and other compensation, and $72,200 from pension and supplemental employee retirement plans. In the previous 2012 fiscal year, he received $3.4 million in total compensation.

The incentive plans for executives, which are based on rolling four-year periods, paid ?maximum or close to maximum payouts for many senior executives for fiscal year 2013,? the report says.

The hefty payouts were tied to the investment board?s strong performance over the past four years, which saw $3.7 billion of value added to the pension funds over and above benchmark returns, the report says. Over the four years since the financial crisis of 2008-2009, the investment board has achieved an annualized return of 12.2 per cent.

?It?s a pay-for-performance model. If you have good (performance), then the incentive plans have payouts, and if you don?t have the performance then they don?t pay out,? said board spokesman Mark Boutet.

?This year, it was our best performance against our benchmark in the whole history of the organization.?

Indeed, senior vice-presidents Daniel Garant (public markets investments) and Neil Cunningham (real estate investments) both earned more than $3 million in total compensation, including more than $300,000 each in base salary, and more than $1 million each in both short-term and long-term incentives.

Fellow senior vice-presidents Derek Murphy (private equity investments) and Bruno Guilmette (infrastructure investments) were paid $2.7 million and $2.1 million respectively.

Incentive compensation is the largest component of the total remuneration paid to the board?s executives, with short-term and long-term financial incentives based on rolling four-year periods. The board says the incentive compensation structure rewards outstanding performance while discouraging undue risk taking.

The Conservative government has adopted changes to the public service pension plan that, over time, forces federal workers to increase their contributions to 50 per cent and equal those of the employer. Also, the government has increased the normal age of retirement for new federal workers to 65 from 60.

The pension investment board reports to Treasury Board President Tony Clement, but it?s an arm?s-length organization that establishes its own compensation levels, say federal officials. The government directed questions back to the Crown corporation.

The organization?s board of directors ? which is appointed by the government on the minister?s recommendation ? approved the compensation payouts, based on a policy that ?aims to maintain total compensation at a fair and competitive level.?

The federal auditor general and outside auditor Deloitte conducted a special examination in 2011 of the pension investment board?s compensation framework and found its incentive programs are comparable to industry practices.

The Public Sector Pension Investment Board is one of Canada?s largest pension investment managers, with approximately $76.1 billion of assets as of March 31, 2013.

Day-long music event to help Browndale man - The Times-Tribune

A number of the region's top musicians will visit Browndale next weekend to raise money for a beloved member of the greater Forest City community.

On Sunday, July 28, the volunteer fire companies of Browndale and Forest City will hold an all-day benefit concert for Patrick Sherry, a volunteer fireman for both companies who is undergoing cancer treatments. The event will take place at Browndale Fireman's Ball Field off Route 247, with music starting at 11 a.m. and not ending until 8 p.m.

Slated to take the stage at the concert are Hitchin' Cricket, Powerglyde, Mojo, Phyllis Hopkins Electric Trio, Matt Bennick and the Blues Mine, Rogue Chimp and Old Friends. Additional entertainment will be provided between sets by John Quinn, Jim Carro and comedian Paul Dudrich, performing as Father Paul.

Tickets to the concert, which will include basket raffles and 50-50 drawings, are $25 in advance and $30 at the door, with children 12 and under able to attend for free. Hot dogs, hamburgers, sides, soft drinks and water will be provided with admission, while attendees can provide their own alcoholic beverages.

Mr. Sherry's cancer started with a large tumor on his neck, then spread to his lungs. Since his diagnosis about two months ago, he has undergone chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

To make matters worse, the Vandling resident was laid off from his job at General Dynamics more than a year ago and, until recently, didn't have insurance. Meanwhile, right around the time of his diagnosis, his beloved dog died of cancer, and a car crashed into his front porch.

The news of Mr. Sherry's illness devastated his many friends in the community. Mr. Sherry is the type of guy who would drop whatever he's doing to assist a friend in need, said event committee member and volunteer fireman Jim Richards.

"Pat puts everyone first," Mr. Richards said. "Pat has a lot of friends. It's a small community and people want to help out."

Not long after Mr. Sherry's diagnosis, Mr. Richards and several other friends decided to hold a fundraiser to help the Sherry family with medical costs and other expenses that have arisen since the illness.

The idea for the concert came from local musician Bill Coleman, Mr. Sherry's longtime next-door neighbor.

"Pat's the kind of guy, when there's a snowstorm at night, he's the one who has everyone's sidewalks all done by the morning," Mr. Coleman said.

Mr. Coleman quickly started calling fellow musicians throughout the area. Most were receptive, and, before long, he had put together "a great lineup."

"We just hope to get some people there for a day of good music and fundraising," Mr. Coleman said. "We've got people coming in from Washington, D.C., Baltimore, New York. It's not just for people in the greater Forest City area."

Mr. Sherry's wife, Melody, said the support from the community has been "overwhelming" for her and her husband.

"It's just wonderful," she said. "It's tough for us to receive, because we're always the ones giving."

The Sherrys recently received some good news. Mr. Sherry's doctors informed him that the chemo is successfully shrinking the nodules on his lungs.

"Things are looking up," Mrs. Sherry said. "We have a great outlook and lots of support."

Shares cruise towards fourth week of gains

LONDON (Reuters) - World stocks took a breather on Friday but were set for a fourth week of back-to-back gains following some forecast-busting U.S. earnings and assurances from the Federal Reserve about its plans for stimulus withdrawal.

Major currency and commodity markets were also subdued, with the dollar <.dxy> giving back Thursday's gains and the euro doing the opposite. The yen was pushed up by position-squaring ahead of elections in Japan on Sunday.

Europe's FTSEurofirst 300 <.fteu3> share index edged down 0.3 percent as bourses opened, but was firmly on course for its first four-week run of uninterrupted gains since May, as was MSCI's 45-country all-world index <.miwo00000pus>.

Analysts say the rises have been fuelled this week by solid corporate earnings, especially in the United States, and by reassurance from Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke over the U.S. central bank's easy monetary policy.

"A lot of cash has gone into the market over the last few months but people are now sitting back a bit," said Terry Torrison, managing director at Monaco-based McLaren Securities.

Asian trading had been choppy, with profit-taking on Japan's Nikkei <.n225> ahead of Upper House elections on Sunday matched by yen buying. Wall Street finished at another record high overnight, although disappointing Google and Microsoft results after the bell dampened the mood slightly. <.t><.n/>

In the debt market, German Bund futures were expected to remain in a tight range on Friday, having hit their highest level in six weeks in the previous session.

Euro zone periphery bonds were also expected to see a largely quiet day following gains on Thursday after the ECB loosened its lending rules, and after Portugal's centre-right government easily defeated a no-confidence vote.

East Boston 4, Newton SouthEast 1: Little League baseball All-Stars pushed to brink

The Newton SouthEast Little League All-Star team faced five straight must-win games on its route to the District 10 Championship.

After Thursday night?s 4-1 loss to East Boston in the Section 3 tournament, SouthEast now faces two more must-wins in a row if it is to play in next weekend?s state Final Four in West Roxbury.

SouthEast had rallied from behind six straight times for victories ? including Wednesday?s 4-3 triumph in the Section 3 opener against Walpole National ? but was unable to make it seven in a row Thursday against an East Boston squad coming off a 23-0 loss to Medford National the night before in Medford.

With all four teams now 1-1 in the tournament ? Walpole used a seven-run fourth inning to get by Medford, 9-2, in Thursday?s early game ? it comes down to win-and-advance in both Friday games. Newton SouthEast will face Medford National in the early game at 5:30, with Walpole National meeting East Boston in the late game.

After SouthEast threw a runner out at the plate for the second straight night in the first inning on Thursday, East Boston did break through for a run on an infield single and put SouthEast in its familiar trailing position early in the game.

As usual, SouthEast responded to the challenge with a run in the top of the second as Matthew Beckles singled, Jake Freudberg ran for him and moved to third on a Brett Goldstein single. Goldstein then stole second base ? putting runners on second and third with no outs ? before a strikeout and pop out threatened a squander.

But Adam Freedman came through with an infield single and the teams were knotted at 1-1 through the top of the second.

East Boston retook the lead on a home run in the bottom of the second. SouthEast looked to have something going in the top of the third as Brandon Lee singled and Brad Genser?s double had runners on second and third with one out. But a pop out and flyout ended that threat, and East Boston stretched its lead to 4-1 with a two-run home run in the bottom of the third.

Freedman hit a two-out single in the fourth inning, and Zeke O?Connell?s single after Lee was hit by a pitch had two on with no outs in the fifth, but SouthEast couldn?t summon the late magic that it had conjured up so many times in the previous 10 days.

If SouthEast wins on Friday, it will face the winner of the nightcap between Walpole National and East Boston in the Section 3 title game Saturday afternoon in Westwood (time TBA).

The winner of that game advances to the state tournament to be held at Praught Field in West Roxbury.

NEW YORK ? Six current college football players were added as plaintiffs Thursday to a high-profile anti-trust lawsuit that claims the NCAA owes billions of dollars to former players for allowing their likenesses to be used without?compensation.

The players are: Vanderbilt linebacker Chase Garnham; Clemson cornerback Darius Robinson; linebacker Jake Fischer and kicker Jake Smith from Arizona; and tight end Moses Alipate and wide receiver Victor Keise of?Minnesota.

Former UCLA basketball star Ed O?Bannon is the lead plaintiff among 16 former college athletes in the long-running legal battle that could fundamentally alter how the NCAA operates. Basketball Hall of Famers Bill Russell and Oscar Robertson previously joined the lawsuit that also names video-game maker EA and the Collegiate Licensing?Company.

A federal judge in Oakland, Calif., on July 5 allowed the attorneys to update their lawsuit to fix legal technicalities, including adding at least one active player to the?lawsuit.

Garnham and Fischer are the most prominent players among the six new plaintiffs, all of whom are?seniors.

Fischer is one of the Pac-12?s top linebackers. He led Arizona with 119 tackles last?year.

Garnham led Vanderbilt with seven sacks and 12.5 tackles for?loss.

Robinson has started six games in each of the last two seasons for the Tigers, though his season was cut short last year by an ankle injury in?October.

Smith is a walk-on who missed last season with a knee injury and is competing for a starting job this season. Keise played 14 games over three seasons for the?Gophers.

Microsoft asks US Attorney General to intervene on security disclosures, denies assisting with NSA interceptions

Microsoft sits between a rock and a hard place when it comes to privacy -- it can't reveal more about FISA requests, but it's also accused of assisting with NSA eavesdropping. The company is trying to settle both matters today, starting with a call on the US Attorney General for help. Microsoft hasn't had a response to its June 19th request to publish aggregate security request data, and it wants the Attorney General to directly intervene by legalizing these disclosures. The government official hasn't publicly acknowledged the request so far, although we weren't expecting an immediate answer.

At the same time, Microsoft is expanding its denials of The Guardian's recent reporting that it facilitates large-scale NSA snooping. Along with insisting once more that it only offers specific information in response to legal requests, the firm claims that its supposedly eavesdrop-friendly actions were innocuous. Microsoft was only moving Skype nodes in-house rather than simplifying the NSA's access to audio and video chats, for example. It's doubtful that the public position will completely reassure doubters given the veils of secrecy surrounding the NSA and its collaborators, but the crew in Redmond at least has a full statement on record.

FRANKFURT -- Volkswagen Group named its U.K. chief, Simon Thomas, head of global marketing for the group and for the company's core VW brand.

Thomas will play an important role in helping VW Group meet its Strategy 2018 goals, a spokesman said.

As part of the strategy, VW aims to surpass Toyota Motor Corp. and General Motors Co. to become the world's top-selling automaker.

Thomas, 53, joined VW in 2011 from Nissan where he was European head of sales and marketing.

He succeeds Juergen Stackmann, 51, who was appointed CEO of VW's Spanish unit Seat in May.

Thomas will coordinate marketing activities with the marketing bosses of VW Group's individual brands, the spokesman said. VW's brands include VW, Skoda and Seat, as well as Audi, Porsche, Bentley and Lamborghini.

Thomas will report to Christian Klingler, VW Group board member for sales and marketing, and takes up the new role on Sept. 1.

Thomas, a British national, was appointed Nissan Europe's senior vice president of sales and marketing in 2009 during a period of revival for the automaker in the region.

He began his automotive career as an apprentice technician in 1976 at a Ford dealership, later joining the Austin Rover Group, then Nissan UK.

Thomas moves to global role at VW.

VW Group's six-month global sales increased by 5.5 percent year-on-year to a record 4.7 million units as strong demand in China and the United States offset weak European sales.

Audi's U.S. sales have increased 14 percent this year to 74,277 units but volume at the VW brand has slipped 1 percent to 206,792 units through June in a market that has advanced 8 percent.

VW officials have blamed increased competition in the U.S. compact and mid-sized car markets for the company's sluggish sales performance, as well as the robust pickup truck sector, where VW does not participate.

The automaker aims to boost annual group vehicle sales to 10 million by 2018, up from 9.07 million last year.

Tumblr for iOS receives critical security update, users urged to change passwords

A fresh version of Tumblr just hit iOS devices less than a week ago, but now the Yahoo-owned service is pushing out a newer release with "a very important security update." Not only is the outfit recommending that users download the tweaked app immediately, but it's also asking folks to change their password on Tumblr and on any other service they use the same passphrase. There's no mention of a breach or exactly what the new code patches up, but we'll keep you in the proverbial loop as we learn more.

Update: We've gotten word from Tumblr that it was notified of a security vulnerability and immediately dispatched the update to remedy the issue. Hit the break to read the outfit's entire statement.

Many ostensibly female-oriented phones tend to be compromised, with flashiness on the outside sadly unmatched by power on the inside. Not so Sugar's inaugural, namesake smartphone: while the Android 4.2-based device is lined with 5.16 carats' worth of Swarovski Pure Brilliance gems, the underlying hardware is worth attention all on its own. The 5-inch, 1080p Sharp LCD is backed up by a quad-core MediaTek chip, 2GB of RAM, an 8MP rear camera, a 1.3MP front shooter and either 16GB or 32GB of storage. Sugar plans to launch the phone in China and Europe, although you'll have to wait until August for full details. Apple is investigating an accident in which a Chinese woman was killed by an electric shock when answering a call on her iPhone 5 while it was charging, the US technology company said.

Last Thursday, Ma Ailun, a 23-year-old woman from China?s western Xinjiang region and a flight attendant with China Southern Airlines, was electrocuted when she took a call on the charging mobile telephone, the official Xinhua news agency quoted police as saying.

?We are deeply saddened to learn of this tragic incident and offer our condolences to the Ma family. We will fully investigate and co-operate with authorities in this matter,? Apple said.

Apple declined to comment on details, such as whether this was an isolated case.

Ma?s sister tweeted on Sina?s microblog saying that Ma collapsed and died after using her charging iPhone 5 and urged users to be careful, a message that went viral on the site.

She said: ?Hope Apple can give an explanation!

?What a shame, to pass away like this.?

Xinhua said local police had confirmed Ma died of electrocution but ?have yet to verify if her phone was involved?.

In April, Apple apologised to Chinese consumers and altered iPhone warranty policies in its second-biggest market when its after-sales service suffered more than two weeks of condemnation by the state-run media. Chinese consumers had to pay about $80 for new back covers for their devices, even though they were free in other markets, local media reported.

In a letter in Chinese at the time, chief executive Tim Cook said: ?We sincerely apologise for any concerns or misunderstanding,? adding Apple has ?many things we have to learn? about operating in the country.

Last week a Swiss woman has claimed that her Samsung Galaxy S3 exploded, causing severe burns on her leg.

Fanny Schlatter, 18, told the Swiss daily Le Matin that she was carrying her phone in her pocket when it combusted.

She said it ripped off her trouser leg and gave her ?severe? burns.

Ms Schlatter is planning to make a legal complaint against Samsung.

A company spokesperson said: ?Once we have gotten hold of the product in question, we will conduct a thorough examination to determine the exact cause of this incident.?

Microsoft's Chief Evangelist Steven Guggenheimer On Touch, The Desktop And The Future Of Imagine Cup

The desktop’s future isn’t bright, but it isn’t likely to go away anytime soon, Microsoft’s Chief Evangelist Steven Guggenheimer told me last week during a brief interview in St. Petersburg, Russia on the sidelines of Microsoft’s Imagine Cup finals there. “Over time, it’s likely to go away,” Guggenheimer first said, but then he quickly qualified that statement, saying that he doesn’t know “if it’ll ever go away completely.” With Microsoft 8.1, my personal feeling is that Microsoft continues to de-emphasize the desktop, but Guggenheimer actually argues the opposite. In his view, Microsoft de-emphasized the desktop a bit too much when it first started talking about Windows 8. “We tried to dial it up again a bit at Build,” he said. Today, 700,000 apps run in the Windows desktop mode and “some of the fidelity of mouse and keyboard will never go away.” Excel spreadsheets, AutoCAD and similar tools still need these old-school input methods, after all. In Guggenheimer’s view, there is “this weird balance between [the desktop] ending up being less critical over time, but it probably never goes away completely. Or if it does, it’s hard to predict when.” Microsoft, he believes, “tries to play that balance well.” The company wants new apps to take advantage of the new generation of PC hardware that now often includes touchscreens. “There is a natural transition to apps that talk more to each other and take more advantage of the hardware, which is a change from the desktop,” Guggenheimer believes. Future Of Imagine Cup Over the course of the conversation, we also touched upon Microsoft’s outreach to students and the Imagine Cup, Microsoft’s global software development competition for students. Guggenheimer noted that there are some aspects to the program that “are phenomenal,” but “some aspects don’t scale as well as we’d like.” Over the course of the last few years, Microsoft has tried to increase the number of Imagine Cup entries that become full-blown startups, though the overall number of real success stories there remains relatively low. With 25,000 students participating, the question for Guggenheimer becomes how to scale Imagine Cup so that all of these students – and not just the finalists – get a better chance at turning their ideas into businesses. Specifically, he noted that all the resources Microsoft pours into organizing the Imagine Cup finals in a different country every year represent a “trade-off” and “the money you

Ticket to Ride takes a bland, tedious sounding subject?building a railroad system?and makes it fun and entertaining. As a board game, it's considered a modern classic. Now on Android (and iOS), players from around the world can match their rail-baron skills whenever they like, if they can get past the app's irritating interface.

All Aboard!
In Ticket to Ride you build your rail empire by claiming routes between cities. You score points for each route?the longer the better?and claim them by collecting the appropriate number of colored cards from the sideboard. You score extra points for completing Tickets, lengthy, multi-city routes, and for having the longest continuous route on the board.

As a board game, Ticket to Ride can be an imposing, with tons of little pieces and cards in addition to a lengthy scoring process. The mobile version of the game does away with all the fiddly, tedious parts of the board game and lets you focus on strategy and play.

In this respect, Ticket to Ride shines. The games are fun, surprisingly brief, and frequently challenging. The tension for each round comes from having so many options?from claiming train lines, drawing cards, or drawing tickets?and only being able to choose one action. Once you start playing you can see why this is considered a classic board game.

Ticket to Ride ships with just the classic board, but expansions are available for purchase at several locations in the app.

A lengthy tutorial, comprising an entire game, uses pop-up windows to tell you what to do. I was surprised that although I couldn't turn off the tutorial and finish the game on my own, I could ignore its advice and the tutorial seemed to adapt in turn. Towards the end of the game, with my defeat all but assured, the tutorial started giving me bizarre, bad advice. It also didn't inform me of some game mechanics, like under what circumstances the pool of available cards resets.

Even without the tutorial running, the game isn't always clear about what is happening or what should happen next. Prompts to draw cards are small, displayed at the bottom of the screen, and fade quickly. It's hard to get back into the game up after you've set it aside, since you'll probably forget what you were doing.

Weirdly, the multiplayer controls appear to be split between the lobby (located in the "restaurant" section) and the screen where you begin a game. The iOS version is much simpler and also includes pass-and-play games and LAN games. The multiplayer menus of the Android version were so confusing, I wasn't sure if these features were present.
