Glenn Close Joins Guardians of the Galaxy

Glenn Close is finalizing a deal to join Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She will play the head of an intergalactic police organization called the Nova Corps.

Corps members get their powers from a super computer called the Xandarian Worldmind, and the amount of power they can withdraw is commensurate with their rank, meaning Close's character would be one of the most powerful in the movie.

As far as I know, the members of the Guardians of the Galaxy do not belong to the Nova Corps, but they may team up to take on a greater threat or may even butt heads from time to time.

Chris Pratt is playing Star-Lord, the leader of the Guardians. Zoe Saldana is playing the green-skinned assassin Gamora, and Dave Bautista is playing Drax the Destroyer. The actors playing the other two members, Rocket Raccoon and Groot, have not been revealed.

Lee Pace is on board as the main bad guy, and Michael Rooker is playing a space pirate named Yondu. John C. Reilly, if he commits, will play Rhomann Dey, a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who's there to keep the Guardians in line.

James Gunn is directing, and production is scheduled to start next month over in the UK for an August 1, 2014 release.

10 Beautiful Minerals You Won't Believe Are Found on Earth

We've all seen our fair share of rocks, and most of them aren't that pretty. The ones that are though, can be totally mind-blowing. Ryoji Tanaka, a Japanese photographer and chemist, likes to capture some of the most striking elements, minerals, and compounds in close-up (like the Uranium-containing cuprosklodowskite you see above) and the results are crazy awesome.

Southern California Home Prices Soar in March

As reported by the Associated Press on April 17, Southern California home prices soared in March amidst low inventory levels. The report quotes John Walsh, president of real estate industry research firm, DataQuick, ?It?s remarkable how much the housing scene has changed in a year. At this point in 2012 there were still plenty of folks sitting on the market?s sidelines, waiting to be sure the recovery was real.?

The question for Orange County?s architects and planners, home builders, real estate professionals and urban planning policy leaders is, ?How will our industries lead the rebirth of the local residential market in light of new demographic shifts, anticipated changes in mortgage financing laws, and California?s political and historical landscape?? This multi-faceted question is what the No Place Like Home Conference will seek to address.

The No Place Like Home Conference features nationally recognized and respected speakers and panelists representing several submarkets tied to Southern California?s real estate market including but not limited to:

? Kevin Starr ? Pre-eminent California historian, author of California: A History and Golden Dreams: California in an Age of Abundance, 1950-1963.

? Robert Bruegmann ? Historian and critic of architecture, landscape, preservation, urban development and the built environment and author of Sprawl: A Compact History.

? Joel Kotkin ? Distinguished presidential fellow in Urban Futures, Chapman University; author of The Next Hundred Million: America in 2050.

Shares fall, bonds rise as data fans Fed uncertainty

By Ellen Freilich

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Global equities markets and the dollar fell on Wednesday, reviving a bid for battered safe-haven U.S. debt as signs of strength in the U.S. economy fanned fears the Federal Reserve may soon begin tapering its massive stimulus program.

On Wall Street, cyclical shares led stocks lower as investors continued to question the longevity of the stimulus and worried that less stimulus could lead to less growth.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 93.66 points, or 0.61 percent, at 15,315.73. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 10.44 points, or 0.63 percent, at 1,649.62. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 18.57 points, or 0.53 percent, at 3,470.32.

Fear that the Fed would start to curb the amount of its purchases of Treasuries have cut prices of U.S. Treasuries and propelled yields sharply higher. Benchmark Treasury note yields hit a peak of 2.235 percent, its highest since April 2012, before easing to 2.17 percent early Wednesday.

In Europe, the FTSE Eurofirst 300 index of top shares has dropped 1.67 percent, giving back all of the previous day's 1.3 percent gain and then some.

Financial markets have seen a rise in volatility since Fed chairman Ben Bernanke last week suggested the central bank could begin to roll back its $85 billion-a-month fund injection.

Some investors are avoiding taking big positions as they weigh the strength of a nascent recovery in the global economy against the withdrawal of stimulus.

In fixed income markets, yields on both safer German and U.S. bonds have risen along with those from riskier sovereign issuers, as nervous investors cut back positions.

Traders said the weakness in equity markets had encouraged investors to buy the yen, which is seen as a safe haven, sending the dollar down 1.4 percent to a low of 100.96 yen.

The fall pushed the greenback 0.5 percent lower against a basket of other major currencies as it slipped further away from a 3-year high of 84.50 hit on May 23.

Japan's Nikkei index also bucked the trend in world equity market, ending 0.1 percent higher. The MSCI's world equity index, which tracks shares in 45 countries, posted a 0.55 percent decline on the day.

Many analysts still believe the growth momentum implied by Tuesday's strong figures for U.S. home prices and consumer confidence should ultimately be good for markets but fear the current volatility could continue for some time.

"We've got the (U.S.) payroll figures next week and then all the way though June the market is going to be very sensitive leading up until to the next FOMC (Fed policy) meeting," Michael Gallagher, managing director at IDEAglobal, said.

GLOBAL GROWTH TRIMMED

The concerns over the Fed easing its stimulus effort came as the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) underlined the risks still facing the world economy by cutting its 2013 global forecast to 3.1 percent, from 3.4 percent.

The United States and Japan were seen driving growth, due to their massive monetary easing efforts, but the ongoing recession in the euro zone and a slowdown in China are weighing on the global economy, the OECD said.

However, data out of the euro zone on Wednesday did bolster hopes the European Central Bank could extend its loose monetary policy at its rate-setting meeting next week.

The ECB said loans to the euro area's private sector contracted for the 12th month in a row in April, while separate data showed German unemployment rose unexpectedly in May.

In the commodity market these global growth concerns and the weaker dollar dragged on copper and platinum, while Brent oil slipped under $104 per barrel.

"The market expected a pick up of the global economy this year, but it looks like there will only be a gradual restart to acceleration in the second half, so it seems the tipping point is moving further into the future," said Andy Sommer, analyst at EGL in Switzerland.

Passengers returning to US after cruise ship fire

BALTIMORE (AP) ? For the second time this year, a fire at sea has aborted a cruise ship. This time, aboard Royal Caribbean's Grandeur of the Seas and the ship's 2,200 passengers were expected back in Baltimore on Tuesday after being flown on charter flights from the Bahamas.

The fire that began at 2:50 a.m. Monday was extinguished about two hours later with no injuries reported. A cause wasn't immediately known but the U.S. Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board planned to investigate.

The ship, which left Baltimore on Friday for a seven-night cruise, was headed originally to CocoCay, Bahamas. Royal Caribbean said the ship never lost power and was able to sail into port in Freeport, Bahamas, Monday afternoon. The ship launched in 1996 and was refurbished last year.

Royal Caribbean said on its website and through social media that executives met with passengers in port and that the cruise line was arranging flights for all 2,224 guests. Also, passengers will get a full refund of their fare and a certificate for a future cruise.

Aboard ship, the captain announced that passengers needed to go to their muster stations, said passenger Mark J. Ormesher in an email to The Associated Press. Immediately after, his room attendant knocked on the door and told him and his girlfriend to grab their flotation devices. The attendant said it wasn't a drill.

Ormesher, a native of England, who lives in Manassas, Va., said he and his girlfriend smelled acrid smoke as they went to their muster station, the ship's casino. The crew quickly provided instruction.

"This encouraged calm amongst the passengers," he said. Passengers were required to remain at their stations for four hours, he said, and the captain "provided us as much information as we needed to stay safe."

Ormesher, who is 25 and on his first cruise, said the air conditioner had been shut off, and as the hours passed and the ship got hot, bottled water was distributed. The crew and passengers remained calm, and helped those who needed it. Crying babies were given formula and held while their parents used the bathrooms.

Photos show a substantial area of the stern burned on several decks of the ship the length of about three football fields.

Royal Caribbean said all guests and 796 crew were safe and accounted for. Royal Caribbean spokeswoman Cynthia Martinez said in an email that the company was arranging 11 different charter flights.

The company in a statement on its website said it is "deeply sorry for this unexpected development in our guests' vacation. We understand that this may have been a very stressful time for them. We appreciate their patience and cooperation in dealing with this unfortunate situation."

Carnival Corp. also had trouble with fire aboard ship earlier this year.

The 900-foot Triumph was disabled during a February cruise by an engine room fire in the Gulf of Mexico, leaving thousands of passengers to endure cold food, unsanitary conditions and power outages while the ship was towed to Mobile, Ala. It remained there for repairs until early May when it headed back to sea under its own power.

On the Royal Caribbean ship, after passengers were allowed to leave their stations, Ormesher said he saw water on the outside of deck 5 and in the hallways. The mooring lines were destroyed he said; crew members brought new lines from storage.

The damage at the rear of the ship "looks bad," Ormesher said; burned out equipment was visible.

Martinez said in a news release that a cruise scheduled aboard the Grandeur of the Seas for May 31 has been canceled so the ship can be repaired.

State Education Spending Still Lower Than In 2008: Report

High school students who are graduating this year and getting ready to enter college face a higher education system that still hasn't rebounded from the budget cuts of the Great Recession.

Every state except for North Dakota and Wyoming has cut funding for higher education since 2008, and nationwide state spending for public colleges is down 28 percent in the 2013 fiscal year, according to an analysis by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. Eleven states trimmed financial support per student by one-third, and Arizona and New Hampshire chopped higher education spending per student in half, the analysis found.

The lack of financial support contributed to rising tuition costs, the CFBP found. As a result, 2013 college graduates are the most indebted class yet.

Younger students have taken a hit too. For K-12 education, the U.S. Census Bureau announced this month that per-pupil spending fell in 2011 for the first time in almost four decades.

"This is clearly the fallout from the Great Recession," Michael Petrilli, executive vice president of The Thomas B. Fordham Institute, a conservative education think tank, told NBC's Today Show.

The Wall Street Journal reports that some states are showing signs of once again investing in higher education:

Lawmakers in Indiana recently approved a $500 million funding increase over two years for state colleges and universities, a 14.6% increase, following four years of cuts. New Hampshire's governor has proposed increasing the university budget for the coming academic year by $20 million, or 37%. And state lawmakers in Florida recently approved a budget that increases higher-education funding by $314 million, or 8.3%, following seven years of cuts.

In the K-12 arena, Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton (D) signed a bill last week that significantly bosts funding for public education. California schools are getting more cash this year after voters increased taxes on the wealthy in 2012, although Gov. Jerry Brown (D) is facing a battle over a plan to give more money to districts with low-income families.

The increased support for public education is a result of stronger state tax revenues, which suffered an unprecedented drop in the Great Recession.

"This will be the first year in which states will be back to their pre-recession budget levels," Scott Pattison of the National Association of State Budget Officers told NPR. However, it remains to be seen whether the money will in fact return to elementary and secondary schools and public colleges.

If the funding doesn't increase, public universities may continue to respond to decreased appropriations with tuition hikes.

Memorial Day warning: Americans too distant from those they send to war

The number of Americans who serve in the US military?? especially those sent to combat?? has gone down dramatically in recent years. Critics say civilians need to assume more responsibility for the moral burden of war as well as for the other costs of fighting.

By Brad Knickerbocker,?Staff writer / May 27, 2013

President Obama greets Iraq and Afghanistan war veteran Eilene Henderson in the Arlington National Cemetery during his Memorial Day visit there Monday.

At Arlington National Cemetary today, President Obama laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns, calling upon the nation to keep in mind those fighting in Afghanistan and elsewhere, especially as nearly 12 years of war winds down.

?Regardless of reason, this truth cannot be ignored that today most Americans are not directly touched by war,? Mr. Obama told a crowd of dignitaries and military families gathered to mark Memorial Day. ?As a consequence, not all Americans may always see or fully grasp the depths of sacrifice, the profound costs that are made in our name, right now, as we speak, everyday.?

?Made in our name? may be the most relevant phrase here ? especially as the percentage of Americans serving in uniform declines in the decades following the end of the Vietnam War and an end to military conscription.

?Fewer Americans are making the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan and that?s progress for which we are profoundly grateful,? Obama said. ?This time next year, we will mark the final Memorial Day of our war in Afghanistan.?

Still, he noted, more than 60,000 GI?s still serve far from home in Afghanistan.

?They?re still going out on patrol, still living in spartan forward operating bases, still risking their lives to carry out their mission,? he said. ?And when they give their lives, they are still being laid to rest in cemeteries in the quiet corners across our country.?

For better or for worse, ?their mission? is really ?our mission,? at least in terms of national policy crafted and carried out in a democracy with elected leaders. This was Obama?s implied message, not only on Memorial Day but in his commencement speech Friday at the US Naval Academy and a day earlier in his comprehensive address at the National Defense University outlining continuing (and new) efforts in fighting terrorism.

In a piece headlined ?Veterans need to share the moral burden of war? in the Washington Post last Friday, war correspondent, author, and documentary filmmaker Sebastian Junger argues that the entire nation shares that burden.

?Soldiers face myriad challenges when they return home, but one of the most destructive is the sense that their country doesn?t quite realize that it ? and not just the soldiers ? went to war,? Mr. Junger writes. ?The country approved, financed and justified war ? and sent the soldiers to fight it.?

?This is important because it returns the moral burden of war to its rightful place: with the entire nation,? he goes on. ?If a soldier inadvertently kills a civilian in Baghdad, we all helped kill that civilian. If a soldier loses his arm in Afghanistan, we all lost something.?

?When soldiers come home spiritually polluted by the killing that they committed, or even just witnessed, many hope that their country will share the moral responsibility of such a grave event,? Junger writes.

Finally, A Wrinkle Reducer That Is Also The Embodiment Of Evil

Our superficial, beauty-obsessed culture is pretty scary. People starve themselves or have serious surgeries so they can look a certain way. Will We Eventually Need Apps To Tell Us That We Are Moral People?

It feels nice to get points. It doesn't really matter for what, but the more points the better. When you check into Foursquare you get points, and it feels nice. And sometimes you even get a badge and that feels like the ultimate vindication, even if the badge is for 10 visits to traffic court.

If this point system really speaks to people, why not use it to deal with society's problems? It's genius! For example, if people got points every time they weren't racist, they wouldn't want to be racist anymore. All inveterate and institutionalized racism would melt away, right? Because points! The comedy network Above Average made a Thingstarter for their parody app iNotRacist so you can see just how productive and effective all these tracking apps are. It's time to facilitate some social change.

Iraq officials says separate attacks kill 14

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A string of attacks killed at least 14 people in Iraq on Sunday, officials said, in the latest violence of what has been a particularly bloody month in the country.

Iraq has been hit by a wave of bloodshed that has killed some 300 people in the past two weeks alone, raising tensions between the country's Sunni minority and Shiite-led government. The surge in violence has been reminiscent of the sectarian carnage that pushed Iraq to the brink of civil war in 2006 and 2007.

Sunday's deadliest attack took place in the northern city of Mosul, where a car bomb went off at a house early in the morning while a joint army-police unit was conducting door-to-door searches. The blast killed three policemen and one soldier, a provincial police officer said. Twenty people, including four civilians, were wounded.

Also in Mosul, police said militants gunned down a policeman in his car in the city center. Authorities also found a body floating in the Tigris river, shot at close range with hands bound behind the back. Mosul, some 360 kilometers (225 miles) northwest of Baghdad, is a former stronghold of Sunni militants.

In northern Baghdad's Kazimiyah district, militants in a speeding car went on a shooting spree that killed three civilians and wounded another, two police officers said. A policeman was killed in another attack in the northern Waziriya neighborhood when gunmen in two cars fired on his vehicle, wounding a colleague as well.

Also, in the capital's Qahira neighborhood, militants armed with silenced pistols shot and killed a secondary school teacher, two police officers said. The motive behind the killing was not clear.

In Iraq's western province of Anbar, the birthplace of the Sunni insurgency led by al-Qaida in Iraq, three soldiers were killed and five wounded in two separate attacks by roadside bombs on their patrols, police and army officers said.

Two medical officials confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke anonymously as they were not authorized to release information.

Insurgent attacks have decreased sharply in Iraq since the height of insurgency, but recent spikes in attacks amid months-old Sunni protests against the Shiite-led government have raised fears that sectarian killings could gain fresh momentum across the country.

Alarmed by a nationwide deterioration in the security situation, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has ordered a reshuffle in senior military ranks.

Tilda Swinton brings erudite vampires to Cannes

CANNES, France (AP) ? Tilda Swinton injects her own brand of otherworldly-cool into Jim Jarmusch's latest movie "Only Lovers Left Alive," an unusual comedy that puts a spin on the age-old vampire genre.

The film, the last English-language entry competing for the Cannes Film Festival's Palme d'Or, sees Swinton play Eve, a grungy but erudite vampire ? who's married to a forlorn vampire musician, Adam, played by Tom Hiddlestone. Several-hundred-year-old Adam ? of Biblical fame ? has been living quite happily ever since being expelled from the Garden of Eden.

That is, until the 21st century came along with its excesses and greed and pushed him into a full-flung existential crisis. He cracks, and orders a wooden bullet to kill himself.

With such a wacky plot, it's no surprise the film nearly didn't get made. It took seven years to find a backer ? which Jarmusch says is because producers won't take creative risks anymore.

"I wanted to make a vampire love-story...The reason it took so long was that no one wanted to give us the money. It's getting more and more and more difficult for films that are maybe a little unusual or not predictable or not satisfying the expectations of everybody ? which is the beauty of cinema, discovering new films of all forms."

He added: "But look, now we're here at Cannes."

Lovers of independent cinema and vampire fans should certainly be pleased the film saw the light of day, or perhaps, night. It quirkily spruces up vampire lore. Adam and Eve are not about blood-sucking and murder ? but refined lovers of literature, science, music and learning in general.

When Eve's estranged sister "drinks Ian," a friend, to death, Eve tells her off, saying that in the 21st century people just won't understand such barbarity. (The verb "drink," instead of "blood-sucking," was one of the many moments that provoked raucous laughter from spectators.)

It's not like they can just dump the bodies in the Thames with the tuberculosis sufferers like in old times, she says. Now, in the 21st century, they get their blood from the blood-transfusion section of a hospital. Alongside this, John Hurt plays a vampire Christopher Marlowe, who's still bitter that Shakespeare became more famous.

Swinton said the film provided a unique opportunity to reinvent the vampire genre.

"There's a feeling of beautiful luxury about approaching this kind of portrait, because you can come with a Martian's-eye view... We were able to create our own lexicon," she said. For instance, in the film the vampires elegantly cover their mouths and have a strange ritual with gloves that goes unexplained.

At heart, the film is the love story between Adam and Eve, who try to rekindle their love despite living in different places, he in Detroit and she in Tangiers. It is as touching as it is odd.

"We knew we needed to show a long love story ... that was so evolved that what they actually say to each other is the tip of the iceberg of a conversation they've been having for 500 years," Swinton said. "That was very interesting. We wanted to show a couple who are trying to stay together. Trying to live obviously, but also trying to live together."

In one comic moment, Eve looks at a grainy photo where they're both dressed in 19th century clothing. "Our third wedding," she sighs.

The love story between immortal beings also raised philosophical questions for leading man Hiddlestone, who said playing Adam was a "fascinating prospect" ? a chance of breaking away from the more conventional superhero roles, such as the villain Loki in 2011's Marvel Studios film "Thor," for which he is the most famous.

"The idea of exploring love in the context of immortality ? is (it) a blessing because it recurs, and what does that do to your commitments?" he said.

When news originally got out that Jarmusch, the director of 1999's dark samurai film "Ghostdog," which was also nominated for the Palme d'Or, was going to do a love film on vampires, many were left unconvinced. But Swinton was not one of them and backed the project from the start.

"I was never surprised," she said. "I felt like saying (Jim) you've been making vampire films for years."

(AP) ? The leader of Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group vowed to help propel President Bashar Assad to victory in Syria's bloody civil war, warning that the fall of the Damascus regime would give rise to extremists and plunge the Middle East into a "dark period."

In a televised address, Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah also said Hezbollah members are fighting in Syria against Islamic radicals who pose a danger to Lebanon, and pledged that his group will not allow Syrian militants to control areas along the Lebanese border. He pledged that Hezbollah will turn the tide of the conflict in Assad's favor, and stay as long as necessary to do so.

"We will continue this road until the end, we will take the responsibility and we will make all the sacrifices," he said. "We will be victorious."

The Hezbollah leader's comments offered the clearest public confirmation yet that the Iranian-backed group is directly involved in Syria's war. They also were Nasrallah's first remarks since Hezbollah fighters have pushed to the front lines of the battle for the strategic Syrian town of Qusair near the Lebanese frontier.

The fighting in Qusair, which government troops backed by Hezbollah pounded with artillery on Saturday, has laid bare the Lebanese Shiite group's growing role in the Syrian conflict. Hezbollah initially tried to play down its involvement, but could no longer do so after dozens of its fighters were killed in the town and buried in large funerals in Lebanon.

Nasrallah, who was speaking on the anniversary of Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon in May 2000, used his speech in part to brace the community for the possibility of more of its men returning home in coffins.

The fight in Qusair has proven a deadly grind for both sides. On Saturday, government forces backed by Hezbollah militants shelled the town in the heaviest barrage yet of a week-long assault to dislodge rebels from the opposition stronghold, activists said.

Since the regime offensive began Wednesday, Syrian state media has said government forces have steadily gained ground. Local activists deny that pro-Assad forces have made headway and say rebel fighters are defending their positions.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 30 people, including 27 rebels, were killed and dozens wounded Saturday in the town, which holds strategic importance for both the regime and the opposition.

For Assad, Qusair's value lies in its location along a land corridor linking two of his strongholds, the capital of Damascus and towns on the Mediterranean coast, the heartland of his minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam. For the rebels, holding Qusair means protecting a supply line to Lebanon, 10 kilometers (six miles) away.

Saturday's barrage of rockets, mortar rounds and tank shells began after daybreak, said Qusair activist Hadi Abdullah and the pro-opposition Observatory. Both said it was the most intense shelling since the regime launched its offensive there a week ago.

Hezbollah has come under harsh criticism at home and abroad for sending its gunmen to Qusair, and Nasrallah's gamble in Syria primarily stems from his group's vested interest in the Assad regime's survival. The Syrian government has been one of Hezbollah's strongest backers for decades and the militant group fears that if the regime falls it will be replaced by a U.S.-backed government that will be hostile to Hezbollah.

Nasrallah on Saturday defended his group's deepening involvement and sought to frame the fight next door as part of a broader battle against Israel.

"Syria is the back of the resistance, and the resistance cannot stand, arms folded while its back is broken," Nasrallah told thousands of supporters from a secret location via a video link.

"If Syria falls into the hand of America, Israel and takfiris, the resistance (Hezbollah) will be besieged and Israel will enter Lebanon and impose its will," Nasrallah said. Takfiri Islamists refers to an ideology that urges Sunni Muslims to kill anyone they consider an infidel.

Syria's fall, he said, would mean "Palestine will be lost" and "the people of our region and its nations will enter a bad and dark period."

Along with Iran, Syria has been the main backer of Hezbollah. Much of the group's arsenal, including tens of thousands of rockets, is believed to have come from Iran via Syria or from Syria itself.

Hezbollah's role has drawn intense criticism from Syria's main opposition group.

"Some Lebanese are being sent to Syria as invaders in order to return back home in coffins draped with shame," said George Sabra, the acting head of the Syrian National Coalition.

More than 70,000 people have been killed and several million displaced since the uprising against Assad erupted in March 2011 and morphed into a civil war. The Syrian government and Hezbollah deny there is an uprising in Syria, portraying the war as a foreign-backed conspiracy driven by Israel, the U.S. and its Gulf allies.

The Syrian conflict poses a threat to the stability of Lebanon, whose sectarian divide mirrors that of Syria, and the fighting next door has repeatedly spilled over the border. For the past week, Assad's opponents and supporters have been clashing in the Lebanese port city of Tripoli, using mortars, grenades and machine guns to attack densely populated areas.

Sniper fire in Tripoli killed four people on Saturday, bringing the week's death toll to 29 including three Lebanese soldiers, according to a Lebanese official who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with military regulations. More than 200 people have been wounded.

Nasrallah said Lebanon should be spared the fighting over Syria's crisis and called upon rivals to go fight in Syria.

"You are fighting in Syria and we are fighting in Syria. Let's fight there. Let's keep Lebanon away from the fighting," Nasrallah said referring to Lebanese Sunni militants who are fighting alongside the Syrian opposition.

Hezbollah is also facing repercussions in Europe over its support for the Syrian military.

Earlier this week, France and Germany joined a push by Britain to have the EU declare Hezbollah's military wing a terrorist organization. Such a move, long sought by the U.S., would hamper Hezbollah operations in Europe.

Nasrallah said the threats by the EU "is all ink on paper" adding that this will not affect the group.

"We have been under pressure for 30 years and it did not affect our morale," he said.

Meanwhile, Syria's fractured political opposition failed Saturday after three days of intense deliberations to reach a decision on whether to attend an international conference brokered by the U.S. and Russia aimed at ending the conflict in Syria.

The U.S. and Russia want to bring together representatives of the opposition and the Syrian government at an international conference in Geneva for talks on a possible transition government. Much remains up in the air, including the date, the agenda and the list of participants.

The Syrian National Coalition meetings started Thursday and were scheduled to end Saturday but discord among the fractured opposition delayed the discussions. The talks now were expected to continue Sunday, opposition figures said.

On Friday, Syria ally Russia said the Assad regime has accepted in principle to attend talks in Geneva, though there has been no official statement from Damascus.

The opposition is deeply suspicious about Assad's intention to hold serious peace talks, and senior opposition figures have ruled out attendance unless Assad's departure tops the agenda of such negotiations.

Hezbollah: EU making big mistake

(AP) ? Hezbollah's deputy chief says the European Union would be making a "big mistake" to label the Lebanese Shiite militant group "terrorist."

Sheikh Naim Kassem told Al-Mayadeen TV Friday that such threats "do not concern" or worry the group. He did not elaborate.

France this week joined an EU push to declare the group a terrorist organization amid frustration with Hezbollah's support for Syria's military.

France's move could prove pivotal after Germany joined a British effort to name Hezbollah terrorist. The U.S. has long pressured Europe add Hezbollah to its terrorist list, which would hamper its operations in Europe.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said France will ask that the military branch of Hezbollah be considered as a terrorist organization.
