Wikileaks case: Manning says he considered suicide

Patrick Semansky / AP

Army Pfc. Bradley Manning.

By Courtney Kube, NBC News

FORT MEADE, Md. -- The U.S. soldier accused in the biggest leak of classified information in U.S. history broke his silence in court Thursday, speaking in great length and detail about his time in various U.S. military detention facilities.

In the third day of a hearing to determine whether he should face court-martial, Pfc. Bradley Manning began by describing the day he was detained in Iraq on May 27, 2010, and then described each cell and detention facility he's been in since.

After a few days in a facility in Iraq, Manning was taken to Camp Arifjan in Kuwait. He characterized his cell there as a "cage," dark and with no air conditioning. Manning said that after several weeks in the segregation tent at Camp Arifjan he felt like a caged animal. "I was a mess, I totally started to fall apart," he said.

Manning described how he "started to really deteriorate,? and how he was anxious all the time. "I'm going to die, I'm stuck inside this cage," he said he thought to himself, adding, "I had pretty much given up."

He said that on June 30, 2010, he had a mental break from reality. Manning said that he doesn't remember yelling uncontrollably, screaming, mumbling, or making a noose out of his bedsheets, describing everything from those hours as foggy and hazy.

Manning acknowledged that he "certainly contemplated" suicide but that he "didn't want to die," he just wanted to "get out of the cage."? After several weeks of medication, Manning said, he began to "flatten out."

That July, he found out he was moving to another facility, but he had no idea where he was going. He speculated that he could be going to Guantanamo Bay, saying that he was "very scared" and "had no idea" what would happen to him. It wasn't until he was on a plane in Germany that he found out he was flying to Baltimore-Washington International Airport.WI.

Manning said he was "elated" to be back on U.S. soil, but that feeling was trampled when he arrived at Quantico for in-processing. He testified that the Marines conducted a "shark attack" on him, forcing him to fill out paperwork for hours, barking at him the entire time.

During those hours, Manning answered a question about any suicidal tendencies by saying that he is "always plotting, but never acting."? He wasn't thinking about what he was writing so he responded sarcastically he said, adding that he now regrets that. That statement would haunt him for the duration of his time at Quantico.

Manning was placed on suicide risk when he arrived at Quantico, and he stayed at virtually the same restrictive level for his entire nine months there.

During Thursday?s hearing he used a diagram made of white tape on the floor of the courtroom to illustrate how small his Quantico cell was. He put on a suicide smock (the thick, heavy jumper he was given to sleep in at night), showed a suicide mattress, and described his daily life there.

Manning was always in restraints when out of his cell, and he described in detail a minor altercation he had with the guards in January 2011 that led to even further restrictions.

Manning, frustrated to still be on restrictions in March 2011, tried to make his case to the commander at the brig. He argued that if he wanted to kill himself, he could just use his socks or underwear, something already in his cell.

As expected, that caused the brig leadership to begin taking his clothes away from him at night, citing the need to protect him from harming himself. This was how Manning ended up standing naked at count one morning. Manning testified that he spent several minutes standing completely naked as the guards counted the prisoners after his first night without clothes. His clothes were taken away again that night (and every night after that), but the following mornings the guards had his clothes waiting for him before count.

In April 2011, Manning was transferred to the Joint Detention Facility at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. He described how strange it felt to be allowed to move around without leg and arm restraints. "It felt awkward," he said. He was surprised to see that at his new facility he was not only given underwear, but he had a T-shirt, shorts, sheets, blankets, a pillow and toiletry items.

Manning testified that this was a "huge upgrade" and he was actually concerned that it was a mistake or miscommunication. Manning got into a verbal and physical altercation with another detainee at Leavenworth, but they were both punished and he has not had any other problems since then.

Overall, Manning testified for more than six hours this afternoon. He was polite, answering sir or ma'am to every question. He rambled at times, clearly unsure how to answer certain questions from his own attorney, and often forgetting names and dates.

We learned a little bit about how he spent his 21 to 23 hours per day in solitary ... he testified that he wasn't allowed to exercise in his cell at Quantico, so he would often "practice various dance moves," calling it "a form of pseudo exercising."

He said he often made faces at himself in the mirror in his cell and played peek a boo with himself, calling the mirror "the most entertaining thing in there." He said he knew he was looking at himself in the mirror, and that he "wasn't seeing anyone else."

Manning acknowledged that he would pretend to lift imaginary weights, calling it strength training, and that he did pretend to have sword fights with himself and that he knew that the guards were watching him.

And he said he prefers non-fiction books and enjoys reading about philosophy and history, but he named John Grisham and Tom Clancy as a couple of his favorite authors.

Court is now in recess. Manning is back in court Friday morning for cross examination from the prosecution.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama argued Friday that allowing taxes to rise for the middle class would amount to a "lump of coal" for Christmas," while Republican House Speaker John Boehner declared that negotiations to surmount a looming fiscal cliff are going "almost nowhere."

Obama took his case to an audience in a Philadelphia suburb, saying that this move would present a "Scrooge Christmas" for millions of wage-earners. Speaking at a toy factory, the president said Republicans should extend existing Bush-era tax rates for households earning $250,000 or less, while allowing increases to kick in for the wealthy.

On Capitol Hill, Boehner argued that Obama's latest offer ? to raise revenue by $1.6 trillion over the next decade ? would be a "crippling blow" to an economy that is still struggling to find its footing. The Ohio Republican told reporters he would continue working with Obama to avoid hundreds of billions in tax increases and spending cuts that will take effect beginning in January if Washington doesn't act to stop it, but gave a gloomy assessment of the talks so far.

"There's a stalemate. Let's not kid ourselves," Boehner said. "Right now, we're almost nowhere."

Obama's speech came a day after his administration proposed $1.6 trillion in new taxes over 10 years, new spending for the unemployed and struggling homeowners and savings of about $400 billion in entitlement programs like Medicare. The proposal amounts to requests that were already d in Obama's Fiscal 2013 budget plan. Republicans rejected the offer as unreasonable.

Obama said he believed both parties "can and will work together" to reach an agreement to get its long-term deficit under control "in a way that's balanced and is fair."

"In Washington, nothing's easy so there is going to be some prolonged negotiations and all of us are going to have to get out of our comfort zones to make that happen," he said. "I'm willing to do that. I' hopeful that enough members of Congress in both parties are willing to do that as well."

White House officials hoped Friday's trip would build momentum for the president's case, even as Republicans describe the outing as an irritant and an obstacle to fruitful talks. The road trip was part of a dual White House strategy of having the president's team meet with members of Congress while Obama travels the country to pressure Congress to act.

Republicans have said they are open to new tax revenue but not higher rates.

Obama spoke at the Rodon Group manufacturing facility, showcasing the company as an example of a business that depends on middle-class consumers during the holiday season. The company manufactures parts for K'NEX Brands, a construction toy company whose products include Tinkertoy, K'NEX Building Sets and Angry Birds Building Sets.

The president joked that he's keeping his own "naughty and nice list" for members of Congress ? and only some would get a K'NEX set for Christmas.

Administration officials said the offer, presented to Hill Republicans by Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, constituted much of what Obama has previously suggested in budget proposals.

One new feature in the Geithner plan is a call for increasing the nation's debt limit without the need for congressional approval. Under last year's debt ceiling deal, Obama simply had to notify Congress that he was raising the debt ceiling, a move that could be blocked only if both houses of Congress approved resolutions of disapproval that Obama could veto. The administration wants a permanent extension of the debt ceiling with a similar legislative arrangement and with no offsetting spending cuts, as demanded by Republicans.

"Unfortunately, many Democrats continue to rule out sensible spending cuts that must be part of any significant agreement that will reduce our deficit," Boehner said after meeting with Geithner Thursday.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Friday that the proposal for $1.6 trillion in tax revenue was presented in context of a "balanced approach" to deficit reduction throughout the campaign.

"This is the way that we can ask the wealthiest Americans to pay a little bit more to deal with our deficit challenges," Earnest said aboard Air Force One as Obama flew to Pennsylvania.

"This was what the president has campaigned on for a long time and that was what president pushed for in context of the discussions with House Republicans," Earnest said.

Earnest said the proposal laid out by Geithner should not come as a surprise to anyone. Referring to comments by House Republican staffers who expressed surprise at Geithner's proposal, Earnest said, "This morning I was surprised they were surprised."

HIV/AIDS in Charlottesville: Testing and Services | UVA Health - Home

HIV/AIDS doesn?t get as many headlines as it did in the early ?80s, yet 33.4 million people around the world are living with it. ?With World AIDS Day on December 1 approaching, we asked Kathryn Dort, a nurse practitioner with the Ryan White Program, to answer some common questions about HIV/AIDS in Charlottesville, nationally and globally.

Get Tested for HIV
When: Dec. 3, 2012, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Where: University Hospital, Dining Conference Rooms
Testing is free and confidential. You?ll get results within 20 minutes.

How common is HIV in Charlottesville?

Get tested for HIV/AIDS in Charlottesville and Central Virginia.

It can take years for HIV symptoms to appear. Get tested to know your status.

We follow the national trends. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is an equal opportunity virus.? Newborn babies, women, seniors, teens and people of all races and nationalities can have HIV. The prevalence of the virus in different groups varies (as it does for other diseases), but it can affect anyone.

The greatest increase in new infections is in people ages 13-29. It?s hard to engage them and get them to seek appropriate medical care.

What services does the Ryan White Program offer for HIV patients?

Ryan White was the Indiana teenager who had hemophilia and got HIV from a blood transfusion.? His struggle to be accepted in a public school with HIV/AIDS helped educate the public about HIV.

He died in 1990, the same year Congress passed the Ryan White Care Act.? This legislation covers primary health care and support services that help HIV-infected individuals ? especially low-income, uninsured and underinsured men, women and children ? have access to appropriate medical care and medications. Our clinic services continue to grow. We offer:

  • Primary care
  • Coordination with other medical specialists
  • OB/GYN care for women
  • Pediatric HIV specialty care
  • Medication assistance
  • Dental care
  • Nutrition support
  • Psychiatrists, psychologists and substance abuse support and counseling

Some of the Ryan White program?s patients travel hundreds or even thousands of miles for HIV care in Charlottesville. What is it about UVA?s program that makes people willing to travel long distances???

I believe it is because our clinic is a safe and caring place to get medical and psychological support. Everyone here is here because they care about the disease and the people affected by the disease. We offer help not only for their infection, but also with combating AIDS-related stigma and discrimination.

People living with HIV confront stereotypes and rejection on a daily basis out in the community based on assumptions of what HIV is and who is infected. The negative attitudes can even come from medical professionals, religious groups, family and friends. The stigma of who gets infected includes race, sexual characteristics, physical appearance and even gender.

Does the Ryan White program have a relationship with other local community organizations such as the AIDS Services Group (ASG)?

We rely heavily on the support that the ASG and other agencies provide. We work with them and the Charlottesville/Albemarle Health Department to provide free HIV testing, outreach and education. ASG provides community and psychological support and links people to medical care.

In the 80s, HIV was often ?a death sentence. What does it mean now to be diagnosed?

It means you have a chronic illness that needs appropriate medical care and treatment, including medications called highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). With early and appropriate care, you can live a long and healthy life.

Does being diagnosed with HIV mean you?ll eventually get AIDS?

No. There are very effective medicines to treat HIV. When people are diagnosed with AIDS, that means HIV has affected their immune system to the point it can no longer fight off diseases that a healthy immune system would. This usually occurs because the person:

  • Was not diagnosed early in the disease process
  • Chose to not get medical care
  • Couldn?t access appropriate care
  • Couldn?t take medications as prescribed

What?s the most common way U.S. residents get HIV?

Unprotected sexual encounters with someone who has HIV and is not being treated. HIV is spread through blood, semen, vaginal fluid, breast milk or other fluids containing blood.

Are there any common misconceptions about AIDS and HIV you hear through patients or in the community?

  • Beliefs that HIV can be cured ? through specific sex acts or new medicines ? are unfounded. There is no cure for HIV. HAART can reduce the presence of the virus but not eliminate it. Even with effective treatment, HIV can accelerate the aging process. It continues to impact the person?s immune system and can cause psychological impairments such as early dementia and depression. It also puts infected persons at a higher risk for certain cancers.
  • Young women report they have anal sex in order to avoid pregnancy. This is very risky behavior. HIV can be in the blood, semen, pre-seminal fluid or vaginal fluid, The lining of the rectum is thin and may allow the virus to enter the body more readily. Condoms break more easily during this type of sexual encounter.
  • Many people think they can look at a person and tell if they have the virus. People can have HIV and look and feel well for many years.

Why should someone get tested for HIV?

A better question is, why not get tested?

People with HIV often have no symptoms for years. Meanwhile, their immune system weakens, and they can transmit the infection to others. Studies show the earlier people infected with HIV get into appropriate care, the better the health outcome.

The testing experience includes education about risk factors. Even if this information is not helpful to you, share it with someone you love to help them stay uninfected.

If you have HIV, how much do condoms reduce the risk of giving it to someone else?? What else can you do to reduce your risk??

Follow these guidelines:

  • Get tested. The CDC recommends everyone between 13-64 be offered HIV testing in any health care setting at least once. Pregnant women should be tested for HIV as part of the initial prenatal testing and again in the third trimester with each pregnancy. People with high-risk behaviors should be tested yearly.
  • If you?re infected, seek medical care so you can begin HAART. HAART can reduce HIV transmission. Studies of mother-to-child transmission show the use of HAART in the mother during pregnancy virtually eliminated HIV transmission to the infant. HAART use in Africa with couples where only one person had HIV was associated with a 92 percent reduction in HIV transmission. ?Although HAART reduces the viral load in blood and vaginal or seminal fluid, it does not eliminate the virus from the system.
  • Discuss your HIV and other STD history/status with your partner and use condoms. Studies of couples where only one partner is infected show latex condoms are highly effective at preventing infection. The key is consistent and correct use of them. While condoms aren?t 100 percent effective, the main reason they fail is incorrect or inconsistent use, not failure of the condom itself. Using oil-based lubricants can weaken the latex, causing the condom to break. Use water-based lubricants.

In June 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Truvada (emtricitabine/tenofovir) for uninfected individuals having sexual activity with HIV-infected partners. Although the drug can help prevent transmission, individuals should still follow these other tips and talk to their healthcare providers.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has promoted circumcision as a way for heterosexual men to reduce the risk of acquiring HIV. Is it really effective? Is this a compelling reason for parents in the U.S. to consider circumcising their newborns?

In August, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) updated its policy on male circumcision. Research shows it has clear health benefits, including lower risks of acquiring HIV, genital herpes, human papilloma virus and syphilis. Circumcision also reduces the risk of:

  • Penile cancer
  • Cervical cancer in sexual partners
  • Urinary tract infections in the first year of life

The Ryan White Program raises money so patients can go to HIV Family Camp.? What exactly is the camp, and why is it so meaningful for these families??

For many children, whether they have HIV or someone in their family does, life with the virus can be very isolating. Our clinic has held a weekend Family Camp at Camp Holiday Trails every spring since 2005. Participation grows every year. We started the camp to give children a safe and happy place to go and enjoy time with their families. It removes them from the day-to-day stressers of chronic illness, and they get the opportunity to just be children. The camp is free to participants, supported by generous donations from the community and from grants from the?BAMA Works Fund?(Dave Matthews Band), among others.

'Second skin' could protect soldiers from chemical threats

7 hrs.

Advances in nanotech have allowed research into materials that actively detect and shut out harmful molecules, or even shed layers like real skin. It?could be a lifesaver for soldiers and emergency workers.

A soldier in the field has lots of protection: A helmet, flak jacket, armored panels and so on. But when it comes to chemical and biological warfare, that equipment is virtually useless. Gases and bacteria can penetrate or simply cling to soldier's garments and gear, wreaking havoc later despite being highly diffuse.

The risk can't be mitigated entirely, but polymer scientists at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory are working on a "second skin" made of?smart materials that would be a far more effective and sophisticated defense than we have now.

They call the fabric they're working on a "hybrid functional material," and it's made of a combination of carbon nanotubes and specially?designed nanoparticles. It's designed not just to block out unwanted agents, like poisonous gas molecules and spores, but to be normally breathable as well in less dangerous situations.

At a molecular level, the nanotubes are aligned vertically and arranged to form pores just a few nanometers wide. While ordinary air can pass through these tiny "nanopores," larger molecules and organisms like viruses simply don't fit.

There are smaller threats, however: Nerve agents and mustard gas would go right through even such tiny gaps. The nanomaterial?membrane?would be coated with "responsive functional groups," special molecules designed to respond to the presence of such deadly toxins. Activated molecules would trigger the nanopores to shut completely.

Lastly, in the case of agents that tend to stick around instead of diffusing, such as anthrax, the material will be designed to slough them?off, mimicking human skin. That way a garment exposed to infection wouldn't bring it back to, or out of, a hospital or base.

The leader of the research team is LLNL's Franceso Fornasiero, who is working closely with UMA's Kenneth Carter and James Watkins and others. They've just received a $1.8 million five-year grant to research how to manufacture these nanomaterials in bulk, and they estimate that new nano-uniforms could be in the field within 10 years.

Interesting article about BAT's practices in South Africa and Nigeria

Bat-lady-465x349Browsing away I visited the excellent tobacco.org site and while searching for news about Africa I found this very interesting article by Ogala Emmanuel?published on Premium Times. One part of the story is about the way BAT switches from traditional advertising (on billboards etc) to more subtle promotional practices, like offering cigarettes in many public places, "just so adult customers can test our brands". A classic move that is used globally and is more difficult to combat than illegal traditional ads and is probably more dangerous.

Ludworth Charl, the highlight of the williamhill.com Stakes

The Grade A1 williamhill.com Stakes will be staged at Newcastle over 480 metres flat on Tuesday, 27th November. Taking their chances with the ?133 prize money are, Nadurra Alvaro, Ludworth Charl, Liosgarbh Ead, Killinan Brave, Strange Ozzy and Kielduff College. The 11 to 4 joint favourites for the race are, Kielduff College and Ludworth Charl.

The two-year-old blue and white dog, Ludworth Charl, started racing just this season and has been striving to maintain a certain benchmark in his performance since the last four outings. He ended second in two outings, third and then first in the very recent attempt.

He scored second in the Grade A1 williamhill.com Stakes on 6th November, 2012 at Newcastle over 480 metres.

He took off from the second stall, but got baulked when racing in the first position and after that could not match the stance of the winner, Liosgarbh Und, who had the race concluded in 29.28 seconds.

The loss did not turn out to be a devastating blow as the blue trap qualified as the runner-up by the loss of a neck?s mark.

The P. Rutherford trained retained the form and the ranking in the Grade A1 William Hill ? The Home Of Betting on 10th November, 2012 at Newcastle over 480 metres flat.

This time he missed the first spot by a length?s mark as he failed to match the leading strategy of the winner, Shiloh Supreme, who took off from the red trap and made it to the other end of the wire in 28.96 seconds.

Ballymac Maeve?s son then went all out in the Grade A1 William Hill Supporting Racing Post Tv Stakes on 21st November, 2012 at Newcastle over 480 metres flat.

He raced in the blue jacket of the second trap and did not wait for long to take up the leading role on the track. The favourite entry concluded the race in 29.16 seconds and led the runner-up, Droopys Maureen by good three lengths.

For tonight too he has retained the blue trap, there is nothing new or unfamiliar about it as the two-year-old has already raced and won from it.

Three Traits That Every Web Design Company Should Possess And ...

There are a few key things that every web design company should possess. To start, you need to make sure that any web design company that you are considering hiring is going to have a range of experience that will help to ensure that they are going to do a suitable job on your website. You should aso look for a company that has high quality graphic design, as graphic design is a very key aspect of any good web design company. Any company that you are considering working with is always going to have an extensive amount of coding knowledge in order to ensure that they will be able to customize the script for you to match your business flow.

    Experience

The most important aspect as you were looking at a kelowna web design company, is the amount of experience that they have. Not only should they have a portfolio that will be available for you to view, and get a good idea of the level of quality that they provide, but there were also be reviews from previous clients online that can help you to better understand how they have been able to help previous customers, and the level of quality that you can expect from the project. Although experience is an important part of the process, you also need to look at the level of graphic design that they can provide as well.

    Excellent Graphic Design

Graphic design is a very important aspect of the web design business. Without graphic design, you can get a great looking website, and will find that your website will come out looking much better than you originally anticipated. Oftentimes, the actual web designers of the company are going to be completely separate from the graphic designers, and the to work together to produce a high-quality finishing product. Graphic design on its own can be quite expensive, and is factored into the overall price of the web design. This will help you to ensure that your website looks as good as possible.

    Coding Knowledge

With any web design project, you need to make sure that the company has an extensive amount of coding knowledge. This will help them to customize your website, and provide you with features that you otherwise would not receive. Depending on the level of customization that you are looking for, and the specific features that you build like, this can drastically affect the price of any web design that you are considering paying for, and should be something that is taken into account, but is not an end-all be-all., as you can hire a development company to work in conjunction with your vancouver web design company.

When you are evaluating a web design company, you need to start by looking at the level of experience that a company has, whether not they have good graphic designers that will help you to design the website, as well as a wide range of coding knowledge to help you properly customize the website.

Apple to start selling new iMacs on Friday

(AP) ? Apple says the smaller version of its new, slimmed-down iMac desktop computers will go on sale Friday. It will also start taking orders for the larger model, but the units won't ship until next month.

The model with the 21.5-inch screen will cost $1,299 and up, depending on the configuration. The model with a 27-inch screen will start at $1,799.

The iMac tacks the computer components to the back of a large LCD screen. The new models have no disk drive, helping make the edges one-fifth the thickness of the old model. They bulge considerably toward the middle of the back, however.

Apple revealed the new models a month ago.

Apple shares fell $2.04 to $587.49 in afternoon trading.

ConocoPhillips to sell Kazakh oilfield stake to India's ONGC for $5 billion

(Reuters) - ConocoPhillips said it plans to sell its 8.4 percent stake in Kazakhstan's giant Kashagan oil field to India's Oil and Natural Gas Corp Ltd for about $5 billion as the Indian company looks to make up for flagging production.

Kashagan, the world's biggest oilfield discovery since 1968, holds an estimated 30 billion barrels of oil-in-place, of which 8-12 billion are potentially recoverable. First production from the field is expected in 2013.

India, the world's fourth-biggest oil importer, buys nearly 80 percent of its oil needs as expanding refining capacity has outpaced local oil output. State-run ONGC's local oil output has been almost stagnant for years.

ConocoPhillips said the carrying value of the assets related to its Kashagan interest was about $5.5 billion as of September 30.

The company said it would take an after-tax impairment of about $400 million in the fourth quarter to reduce the carrying value. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2013.

ONGC, India's third-biggest company by market value, has been investing to maintain output from its old fields and has capital spending plans of around 340 billion Indian rupees ($6.12 billion) both this year and next. The company is under pressure from the government to meet rising demand.

The acquisition is the largest ever for ONGC, and marks the biggest outbound deal from India since mobile phone operator Bharti Airtel bought mobile phone operations in 15 African countries for $9 billion in 2010 from Kuwait-based telecoms group Zain .

ONGC Videsh, the arm of ONGC that invests in overseas assets, said the acquisition would likely add 1 million tonnes (20,000 barrels per day) to its annual production over 25 years with the company's share of output significantly higher in later stages of development. ONGC Videsh's production in the year to March 31, 2012 was 8.7 million tonnes.

Kazakhstan, home to 3 percent of the world's recoverable oil reserves and the largest former Soviet oil producer after Russia, has sought to revise deals struck with foreign energy companies in the lean post-Soviet years.

ConocoPhillips has been conducting a disposal program to reduce its non-core overseas assets to reduce debt and increase its exploration and dividend budgets.

It has already exceeded its target of asset sales worth $20 billion by the end of 2012, including the sale of its stake in Lukoil , Russia's second-biggest oil producer.

"(The) purchase price of $5 billion is at the high end of our prior expectation of $4 to $5 billion," analysts at Simmons and Co wrote in a note to clients.

"This is a positive for ConocoPhillips as it marks important progress on their asset divestiture program, which is needed to support the capital program and dividend."

ConocoPhillips shares down slightly at $56.39 in early trading.

The company said it notified government authorities in Kazakhstan, and its partners in the North Caspian Sea production-sharing agreement of its intention to sell the stake.

Kazakh Oil and Gas Minister Sauat Mynbayev last month disclosed ConocoPhillips' plans to sell its stake in the field.

The Kashagan field is jointly controlled by state-run KazMunaiGas and six international companies, including Eni Spa ExxonMobil Corp , Royal Dutch Shell Plc , Total SA and Inpex Corp .

Researchers make flexible, low-voltage circuits using nanocrystals

    Tuesday, November 27, 2012

Electronic circuits are typically integrated in rigid silicon wafers, but flexibility opens up a wide range of applications. In a world where electronics are becoming more pervasive, flexibility is a highly desirable trait, but finding materials with the right mix of performance and manufacturing cost remains a challenge.

Now a team of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania has shown that nanoscale particles, or nanocrystals, of the semiconductor cadmium selenide can be "printed" or "coated" on flexible plastics to form high-performance electronics.

The research was led by David Kim, a doctoral student in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in Penn's School of Engineering and Applied Science; Yuming Lai, a doctoral student in the Engineering School's Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering; and professor Cherie Kagan, who has appointments in both departments as well as in the School of Arts and Sciences' Department of Chemistry. Benjamin Diroll, a doctoral student in chemistry, and Penn Integrates Knowledge Professor Christopher Murray of Materials Science and of Chemistry also collaborated on the research.

Their work was published in the journal Nature Communications.

"We have a performance benchmark in amorphous silicon, which is the material that runs the display in your laptop, among other devices," Kagan said. "Here, we show that these cadmium selenide nanocrystal devices can move electrons 22 times faster than in amorphous silicon."

Besides speed, another advantage cadmium selenide nanocrystals have over amorphous silicon is the temperature at which they are deposited. Whereas amorphous silicon uses a process that operates at several hundred degrees, cadmium selenide nanocrystals can be deposited at room temperature and annealed at mild temperatures, opening up the possibility of using more flexible plastic foundations.

Another innovation that allowed the researchers to use flexible plastic was their choice of ligands, the chemical chains that extend from the nanocrystals' surfaces and helps facilitate conductivity as they are packed together into a film.

"There have been a lot of electron transport studies on cadmium selenide, but until recently we haven't been able to get good performance out of them," Kim said. "The new aspect of our research was that we used ligands that we can translate very easily onto the flexible plastic; other ligands are so caustic that the plastic actually melts."

Because the nanocrystals are dispersed in an ink-like liquid, multiple types of deposition techniques can be used to make circuits. In their study, the researchers used spincoating, where centrifugal force pulls a thin layer of the solution over a surface, but the nanocrystals could be applied through dipping, spraying or ink-jet printing as well.

On a flexible plastic sheet a bottom layer of electrodes was patterned using a shadow mask ? essentially a stencil ? to mark off one level of the circuit. The researchers then used the stencil to define small regions of conducting gold to make the electrical connections to upper levels that would form the circuit. An insulating aluminum oxide layer was introduced and a 30-nanometer layer of nanocrystals was coated from solution. Finally, electrodes on the top level were deposited through shadow masks to ultimately form the circuits.

"The more complex circuits are like buildings with multiple floors," Kagan said. "The gold acts like staircases that the electrons can use to travel between those floors."

Using this process, the researchers built three kinds of circuits to test the nanocrystals performance for circuit applications: an inverter, an amplifier and a ring oscillator.

"An inverter is the fundamental building block for more complex circuits," Lai said. "We can also show amplifiers, which amplify the signal amplitude in analog circuits, and ring oscillators, where 'on' and 'off' signals are properly propagating over multiple stages in digital circuits."

"And all of these circuits operate with a couple of volts," Kagan said. "If you want electronics for portable devices that are going to work with batteries, they have to operate at low voltage or they won't be useful."

With the combination of flexibility, relatively simple fabrication processes and low power requirements, these cadmium selenide nanocrystal circuits could pave the way for new kinds of devices and pervasive sensors, which could have biomedical or security applications.

"This research also opens up the possibility of using other kinds of nanocrystals, as we've shown the materials aspect is not a limitation any more," Kim said.

Raspberry Pi says it'll run Minecraft, demos upcoming 5-megapixel, 1080P, $25 camera

Raspberry Pi demos new 5megapixel, 1080P camera, runs Minecraft

The Raspberry Pi will soon be able to see all, thanks to an upcoming camera board that will mate with unused CSI pins on the $35 hobbyist board. The new 5-megapixel camera (in the video after the break) will be capable of 1080P, 30fps video, and though the prototype being shown at Electronica 2012 is attached using scotch tape technology, the Pi foundation promised it would come with a proper mount when it ships in the new year for $25. In other news, the group has also announced a new port from the Notch gaming group called Minecraft: Pi edition. You'll be able to play the game, of course, but if you're feeling more ambitious it'll also support several programming languages, letting you "modify the game world with code" to boot. The group promised you'll be able to download it next week at the source.

How To Stay Pure Until Marriage - Incite Faith

    I?m a virgin.?An?imperfect one.

I?ve made mistakes in my past and mistakes I still think about even now. I wasn?t always pure in my actions and I paid for them. Being a virgin is a choice for me. It?s a choice I?ve upheld since 17. I made a commitment. A vow to myself and?my body?that I wouldn?t give it away to any one unless I was married.

Yes, I?ve been in relationships and there was a lot of pressure in those relationships to??give in?.?It wasn?t the reason we ended our relationship but it started a downward spiral that inevitably ended it. Something always told me to wait.?And I?ve waited.?The ride to here hasn?t been easy. Words like ?prude? and ?uptight? have been spread around over the course of my life. I remember brief conversations with men who I were interested in who told me I would never find a man because I wouldn?t??give it up.?

Words that engraved themselves in my memory, reminding me ?this was a commitment I intended carrying and nothing any one said was going to change it.

Here I am 29,?still?a virgin, and everyday I am learning more about what I want,?don?t?want, and have more questions about sex and marriage than I have in my entire life. Being more intimate with God has helped guide me in understanding my body and?it?s purpose.?It?s a covenant between God and I that shouldn?t be broken.

So, how have I been able to do it? I?ve been asked how and why by people close to me and my response has always changed. And it?s because I?ve changed.?I?m changing now.?God is making all things new everyday and the more I learn who I am, and what I want, I understand why I?m still a virgin.

For me I?ve applied the following in my life to stay pure until marriage:

Create REALISTIC and healthy boundaries in relationships.

In my last official relationship we didn?t have boundaries. He knew I was a virgin and wanted to stay one until marriage. However, because we did ?other things?, his expectations grew and my commitment to remain a virgin was sending mixed signals. I take full responsibility for it and it taught me an important lesson. I made the decision after our relationship was over to create healthy boundaries early on so there is no confusion later. Healthy boundaries for me are: Understanding what makes me comfortable/uncomfortable and knowing what?s appropriate/inappropriate. I realize this can be different for everyone. So, let me clarify.?Kissing is?OKAY.?Hugging and cuddling are?OKAY.?Being affectionate with each other is?OKAY.?These are acceptable for me because I?m naturally an affectionate person and have self-control.

    So, what?s?NOT?okay?

That depends on you. Everyone is different. You know your body. You know what you want. So, I am not going to preach to you about what is acceptable and appropriate behavior for?you.?What I will ask though is:?If God was in the room with you, would He approve of the behavior you and your significant other choose to entertain in outside the context of marriage?

Understand sex in the context of marriage.

Honestly, this has been a huge help for me to stay pure before marriage.?Sex in the context of marriage is beautiful.?Maybe it?s the girl in me, but the more I read and learn about sex, the more I want it,?but I want it differently.?I want it with my future husband.?Right now I am reading??Sex God??by Rob Bell and it?s an amazing book that explores this topic. The sexual bond between a man and woman is central to what it means to be married.?And it?s so much deeper than what our culture paints it.?

    Respect your body.

Respect the person God made you to be.?Our bodies are His and every piece is beautiful in its creation. It?s sacred. I haven?t always respected my body and I often look back on those moments when I didn?t and I?m disgusted.?Sometimes I?m ashamed.?My flesh has failed several times in my life and it?s a daily struggle. Lust has had a grip so tight over my life and body for as long as I can remember. But I know what I want and I?m not settling for less than that.?Your body,?our bodies, are temples where His spirit dwells and every day I remind myself to sow in the spirit, not the flesh.

?It?s easy to take off your clothes and have sex. People do it all the time. But opening up your soul to someone, letting them into your spirit and thoughts, fears, future, hopes, and dreams, that is being naked. This is why when people sleep together after they?ve just met, they?re raising the chances significantly that the relationship will not survive. Racing ahead of the progression always costs something. Too much too fast rarely endures.?

I want sex,?I crave it, but I want sex with the man God has chosen for me. If that makes me a prude, so be it. I?m not in this world to please any one and neither are you. Each and everyone of you know your body and inevitably what you want. We have desires. ?And it?s okay. ?It?s normal.

God gave us our desires, but make sure your desire to pursue Him isn?t placed on the back burner for momentary pleasure.?

?Your strength is a beautiful thing. And when you live in it, when you carry yourself with the honor and dignity that are yours, it forces the men around you to relate to you on more than just a flesh level. You are worth dying for.

If you?re a virgin, what has been the hardest struggle for you?

If you?re married, how did your perspective about sex change after marriage?

Is SEO still a viable traffic solution online or has it's time passed ...

Is SEO Still A Viable Traffic Solution Online Or Has It?s Time Passed?

Is SEO Still A Viable Traffic Solution Online Or Has It?s Time Passed?

There was a time online where it was only possible to drive traffic to your website effectively by leveraging the power and reach of the major search engines. And while search engines like Google still play a huge role in the way we find content online, the truth of the matter is that the social web has changed the game completely. We?re counting more and more on people rather than machines to recommend the kind of solutions that we?re looking for, to guide us to the kind of content we need. And while we?re still in the infancy of this stage of the web, it only looks like it?s getting stronger and stronger.

So does that mean that the world of SEO is dead and gone, and that it?s time to shift our traffic methods to newer and shinier tools and tactics?

    Not hardly.

SEO is still an effective method of driving traffic ? but don?t have it be your only solution

The fact of the matter is that the world of SEO, as ever shifting and changing as it is, is still the number one way people find what they?re looking for online. While there are significant inroads being made by other technologies and tools online, the fact remains that Google and the others are still the go to solution for finding things online ? and that doesn?t look like it?s going to change any time soon.

But that doesn?t mean that you should only focus on SEO work to boost your traffic ? the recent Panda and Penguin changes alongside of Google?s push into the social networking world should have shown you how dangerous that line of thinking is. Nothing could be worse than putting all of your hopes and dreams into a single traffic basket that has shown itself to be so volatile. The SEO world is an every shifting foundation of sand, but it?s still a fundamental of building a business online ? you cannot ignore it and expect to win at the game of online business.

The social web has created a million and one different ways to drive traffic ? tap into them as much as possible as a secondary source of traffic

But while SEO is still king, you need to make sure you are focusing some of your attention on the other up and coming methods of traffic generation. The jury is still out on using Twitter or Facebook to drive traffic to your money sites, but the concept and fabric of the web has changed to a more social means. Now more than ever the power of word of mouth advertising has reached amazing heights, and we can?t just rely on machines to push traffic to us anymore ? especially since Google and the others are actively trying to stop us from being able to game the system to our benefit. You need to devise new traffic sources to work in conjunction with your SEO work, not to the exclusion of it.
