The Clinton Chamber of Commerce salutes the many businesses that are the backbone of our community. When you support local businesses, you help maintain the character of our community, provide continuing opportunities for entrepreneurs, create local jobs and strengthen our community?s economy.
This week our featured business is Antiques on Washington, on the west side of the historic Clinton Square.? Karen Switzer is the owner of Antiques on Washington and opened the store in 2003.
Antiques on Washington features furniture, tools, glassware, linens, and many other antique items.? There are over 100 antique-framed pieces of art?paintings and photographs.? They don?t do a lot of refinishing at this store, preferring instead to buy their antiques in good condition for their customers.? They do small repairs, but their main goal is to have antique items the way they were originally.
Karen?s ?real? job is with her husband, Jim, in the Switzer Law Office where she is a paralegal and works full time.? She checks the store nearly daily and spends many evenings and weekends there.? She has other help, of course, that keeps the store open during the day.? Antiques on Washington provides three jobs to our community.
Karen has always enjoyed antiques and auctions.? She grew up in rural southern Indiana where her parents and grandparents had a lot of antiques in their homes.? She learned her passion from her mom who took her to auctions, thrift stores and antique stores for fun.? It is what they enjoyed doing together.
Karen believes that antiquing is green and good for our society?antiquing is the ultimate recycling!? Antiques on Washington provides two jobs to our community.? Martha Peck and John Palmer both work part-time in the store.? John does everything from fixing to refinishing and working behind the counter.
Karen has inherited a number of family treasures and naturally enjoys them in her home.? She also likes passing on the tradition of family treasures to her own family by also helping others establish the tradition of a family treasure.
The one thing Karen has in her store that is not antique is selected Missouri products.? She carries the Peculiar Spice Company products that include soup, dip, cheesecake and salad mixes.? She also has Farm House Soap made in Holden, Mo.? Both of these make great gifts.
Antiques on Washington is open seven days a week?10 a.m. until 5 p.m. during the week and noon to 5 p.m. every Sunday.? Check out this home grown, locally-owned business and you may just find a new treasure for your family!
