DAVIS (AP) -- A Sacramento County jury is calling for the death penalty for a man convicted of killing two University of California, Davis students more than 30 years ago.
Jurors recommended the sentence for 63-year-old Richard Joseph Hirschfield on Thursday after less than four hours of deliberation.
Hirschfield was found guilty of murder last month in the deaths of college sweethearts John Riggins and Sabrina Gonsalves, who were 18 when they were killed on Dec. 20, 1980.
Two days after they were abducted, their bodies were found later in a ditch 30 miles away. Gonsalves had been sexually attacked.
Hirschfield was in a Washington state prison for child rape eight years ago when cold-case investigators matched his DNA to evidence from Riggins' van.
