Mere months ago, many people around the sports betting world were eagerly staking money on which NFL franchise would be making its way to Los Angeles. The opportunity to inhabit either the proposed Farmers Field in the downtown LA Live complex, or developer Ed Roski?s plot 20 miles outside in the City of Industry, added to the draw of being in the second biggest market in the U.S. is one that many an NFL owner would find hard to resist.
Yet when the deadline for application to move to L.A. passed, no NFL owner had put their name in the hat, leaving LA without an NFL team for another few years at least.
Jacksonville, San Diego, Minnesota, and St Louis were the teams rumoured to be among the front runners for relocation before the deadline passed, but none threw their hat into the ring.
The Chargers were reportedly interested because of their inability to negotiate a new stadium, or at least a renovation of the crumbling Qualcomm, in San Diego. The Rams were also in the mix for a return to LA for similar reasons. The Vikings also had stadium concerns following a roof collapse at the Metrodome, but have since negotiated a deal to stay in Minneapolis in a brand new development, leaving only the Jaguars as the hot seat favourite.
Following the 2012 takeover of Shahid Kahn ? and the lack of attendance at Jaguars games in recent years ? many in the NFL presumed that the Jags were the likeliest to take the plunge and become the Los Angeles Jaguars. ?However, Khan has assuaged those fears and committed to staying in Jacksonville, with the caveat of them playing one home game a year at London?s Wembley Stadium.
With a new logo, new uniforms and a proposed new video board (coming 2014) that will dwarf the one in Jerry-World, Dallas, Jaguars fans finally have something to get excited about, even if it?s not on the field for now.
In fact, so intent are the Jaguars on boosting game day attendance, they are proposing having the NFL Red Zone channel playing on the new video board throughout their games, to encourage those lost to the world of Fantasy Football back to EverBank Field.
While a nice idea, it remains to be seen how players will enjoy seeing the exploits of other teams in glorious HD, especially if the Jaguars follow their recent trend of being a bottom tier team, posting consecutive losing seasons.
