On Friday I started equine techniques lab, they are off-campus and go pretty late in the day and they run through this up-coming week. ? So I don?t know if I?ll be able to post every day this week, but if not I?ll be back next week.
So what are we doing in equine techniques? ?We are placing IV catheters into horses? jugular veins; doing a ?belly tap? (sticking a needle into the abdomen and trying to get fluid out of the peritoneal cavity ? the potential space inbetween abdominal organs); placing a naso-gastric tube; doing a physical exam, neurologic exam and a lameness exam.
Horses (and rats btw) cannot vomit due to how the esophagus enters the stomach and their shape of their stomach. ?So naso-gastric tubes can be life-saving at times if a horse gets in trouble with gas build-up or if they have an intestinal obstruction. ?They are also useful for administering medications and vets can assess the contents of the stomach if needed by taking some out.
Our teacher warned us that the horse might get a nose bleed if we place the tube in the wrong spot (if you go too high in the nasal cavity you hit the ethmoid bone ? there are a lot of blood vessels associated with it) and horses bleed a lot. ?But, he said, if that happens don?t worry he?s never seen a horse die from a nose bleed in his 30 years of being a vet.
One of my classmates placed the tube beautifully, no problem. ?But as she was taking the tube out our horse shook his head and got a nose bleed. ?The amount of blood was amazing! ?And it was gushing, as if we hit an artery, to someone who had not been warned, it would have looked like an emergency.
One of our teachers came over and said he was probably going to bleed for about 15 minutes but eventually it will stop. ?Meanwhile, we should put a towel on his halter, over his nose in case he wants to shake his head ?he won?t spray blood everywhere. ?We did that and it did stop after making a puddle of blood about the size of a stove top. ?I?m sure the amount of blood lost is about the same as a human if humans were larger and 1,000+ pounds. The horse was fine, he was alert and happy to get back to his stall.
So I?m in for more fun with horses this week. ?I?m sure I?ll learn a lot.
