The Next Generation - Consoles of 2013 Leaked Info and Rumors ...

With the new year of 2013 starting, something on the mind of many gamers and developers alike are the new gaming consoles rumored to be hitting the market throughout the year. The most known and sought after consoles for gamers for 2013 are Valve?s Steambox, the OUYA, the PlayStation 4, and the Xbox 720. After days of non-stop research from multiple sources in the gaming world, I, OO Prodijay have created an article that details and puts together the numerous rumors, speculations, and facts about the four gaming consoles mentioned above. Do not waste another minute daydreaming over which console you will try to buy but instead start reading and digging into this article and figuring out what you might expect from this year?s consoles.

Valve, a gaming developer known for creating Steam and its popular game blockbusters like Team Fortress 2, Half-life, and more surprised gamers and developers alike when they made the decision to enter the console market and create their own gaming console known by many as the Steambox. The Steambox has been confirmed by Valve to be released during Q1 of 2013 (March the latest) but Valve has been known to not release their products on their promised/confirmed release dates making it a possibility that the Steambox will not release on its confirmed release date but maybe some time later in 2013 so it can still compete with the PS4 and Xbox 720. There have been no rumors or confirms on the pricing of the Steambox but it will most likely be expensive and the amount will probably stay the same and unlikely to change for some time compared to the PS4 and Xbox 720 which may lower in prices sooner than the Steambox does after a couple months of being released. With the Steambox, Valve is looking to enter the living room market with their game system which is a closed system unlike an ordinary PC so that it will be less likely to be modded or altered also unlike the OUYA but it will come with a controller and play games from Steam.

What sets the Steambox apart from its competition is the system?s games first mentality or Valve?s main focus on games and nothing else like videos and music unlike the current and next-generation PlayStation and Xbox which have become entertainment systems that allow for gaming, music, movies, etc. Concerning the specs of the Steambox, Valve is keeping all info on the console?s hardware specifications private but the Steambox is believed to come with PC specifications and almost certainly run on Linux and many believe that Valve will not create the console from scratch but instead make the console?s specifications from nearly off the shell parts that Linux operating system already supports including good graphics cards and well-known CPUs. Overall, the Steambox is pretty much going to be a pc/console hybrid that will be played in your living room just like the OUYA, PS4, and Xbox 720. A major advantage for the Steambox over the PS4 and Xbox 720 is that the console makes developing games for it easier because games are made on PC and you will not have to port the game over to console for the Steambox which can help games be released quicker, more efficiently and possibly more cheaper.

Valve?s Steambox is not the only gaming console to come to a surprise to many gamers and developers and be set for release of Q1 of 2013. The OUYA, a revolutionary open source and Android-based gaming console is set for release of early 2013 and is the only one out of the four consoles that is confirmed to be a hackable console that is created to be hackable and will not be competing with any of the other gaming consoles. The OUYA?s development was funded entirely by Kickstarter, which raised $8 million and the developer of OUYA, Boxer8 is being supported by some of the biggest names in gaming, including Notch (owner of Mojang, the company that developed Minecraft), Brian Fargo (founder of developers Interplay Entertainment and InXile Entertainment and yes he is a descendant of the family that created the banking giants Wells Fargo and American Express), Adam Saltsman (a game design who self-publishes games for the iPhone and the creator of Canabalt), Jordan Mechner (video game designer best known for creating the Prince of Persia video game franchise), Robert Bowling (former Creative Strategist and Community Manager for Infinity Ward and President of Robotoki, the developer of Human Element) and many more. The OUYA is priced at $99 with the console available for pre-order now @ $109 (including shipping for USA and $119 for international shipping and you can optionally choose to pay $30 extra for another controller with 3 being the max # of extra controllers you can buy). If you pre-order your console now at OUYA?s website at?www.ouya.tv?then you will receive it sometime in April of this year. Similar to the Steambox, the OUYA is mainly a gaming system and will not be an entertainment system upon release like the PS4 and Xbox 720 but the console does have encoding that would allow it to play movies and have Netflix and other video watching apps on it but that is currently not the main concern of the developers. What set the OUYA apart from the other gaming consoles set to come out this year is that console is being created to give Indie gamers and other developers a chance to enter the living room market which is so exclusive and hard and expensive for new and up-and-coming gaming developers to be a part of.

The main neat features of the OUYA console include: its ability to watch and possibly stream Twitch from the console, its own custom game store, the fact that it will have free to play games from all genres (but only at first then developers will begin to set prices and create ways to monetize their games being put in the console?s store), the console is completely hackable to make it your own including the controller, the console will include SDK for game development and the ability to submit and publish apps to the game store in the same way Android app submission happens today, and the ability to root the device without voiding warranty so the console can be edited and modded all you want without voiding the warranty on it. Concerning the specs of the OUYA, the console will come with a NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core GPU processor (a mobile-oriented GPU), 1 GB RAM, a 8 GB of internal Flash storage (rumored that you will be able to upgrade the memory), and a 1.7 GHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 (this CPU is in the general class of CPU that is used in the PlayStation Vita and iPad 2). The console will also come with an HDMI port for HDMI connection to the TV with support for 720p, 1080i, and 1080p, Bluetooth LE 4.0 connectivity, built-in Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n), 1 USB 2.0 port, the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system, an Ethernet port , and a wireless controller with 2.4 GHz and standard game controls (two analog sticks, a D-pad, 8 action buttons, and a system button), and also a touchpad attached to the controller. The controller will require two AA batteries so in case you are buying the OUYA then you should pick up some AA batteries too before it arrives to your home. It is uncertain whether or not the console is available for only buying on the website or if it will eventually hit game store shelves but as of currently it seems that the console will only be available for buying on the website. Also, if you visit the OUYA website, you can download the OUYA Software Developer Kit (SDK) Version 0.0.4 that was released on Dec 28, 2012 allowing you to develop games for the OUYA.

Sony?s newest gaming console and successor to the PS3, the PS4 (or Orbis or project ?Thebes? as the console has been also called) is originally rumored to come out in the 4th quarter (November-December) of 2013 along the Xbox 720 but there have been other rumors that it is believed to be delayed until early 2014 because of manufacturing issues with its hardware but Sony has not come forward to confirm this to be true. Concerning the estimated price of the console when it releases, there are no factual or rumored prices for the console but some believe the console will cost a minimum of $400-500. The PS4 is believed to not come with backwards compatibility with PS3 and other previous PlayStations making it impossible for the console to play previous PlayStation games. The PS4 just like the Steambox and Xbox 720 is rumored to not be able to play used games by associating a game you buy with your PSN so no more used game market and no more playing a used game or sharing games you buy with your friends and family which is similar to steam where when you buy a game then it is associated to your Steam ID. This rumor was started because of Sony recently patenting a new tech that can used to block used games from being played and not just games but images and music. There is no proof that Sony will implement this technology into the PS4 thought. The idea of not being able to buy games used at a cheaper price or even being able to share/borrow games does suck but it opens the possibility of making it easier for the price of games to be lowered after a certain amount of time of them being released. The PS4 is also rumored to have an echo start feature which will allow gamers to save and resume games without having to switch off the console.

The PS4 will also come with a built-in switch to switch off the console after 30 minutes of no activity. During this time, the console will self-charge automatically from a rechargeable cell which will save energy but also extend the life of the console. Concerning the specs of the PS4, the console is rumored to have 4GB RAM (compared to the Xbox 720?s rumored 8GB RAM) but it is likely possible that the PS4 will have more RAM to compete with the Xbox 720 and make it more easier to port games from the 720 to the PS4. The PS4 is rumored to come with the AMD 7970 GPU (putting in the about the same position GPU-wise as the Xbox 720), a 32.8 Core-cell processor with 16 S.P.E.s, a 1.5 TB HDD (to store a large number of games), USB 3.0 port(s), and an HDMI connect port with full 3-D support and still have a Blu-ray player like its predecessor. The console is rumored to also be able to sync with the Sony Ericsson and the Sony Bravia. A side rumor of the PS4 that was found out to be false was that the PS4 would support 4K resolution which compared to 1080p is twice the amount of resolution since 1080p resolution is roughly equal to 1.92K resolution. The PS4 is going to run in 1080p which seems like nothing special but current generation consoles that run in 1080p actually only run 560p (that is up-scaled and smoothed out to look like 1080p) with the exception of Uncharted 2 and possibly Uncharted 3 and beyond which actually ran at a true 720p which looked like as many have agreed some of the most amazing games graphics-wise ever so for the PS4 to run at a true 1080p (not an up-scaled 560p that most games on the current-generation systems run), the graphics on games for the PS4 and even the Xbox 720 are going to make the 560p games and rare 720p games of this generation look like junk.

Microsoft?s newest gaming console and successor to the Xbox 360, the Xbox 720 or Xbox Loop as it is called by the company?s blogger (or its internal codename ?Durango? or project ?Kryptos? or even Xbox Infinity as believed because of Microsoft buying the url ?Xbox8.com? in late 2012) is widely rumored and mostly believed to be releasing sometime in the 4th quarter of 2013 (October-December) in time for E3 2013 but some reports have indicated that the 720 may be delayed to 2014 because of manufacturing problems with the chip that is to be put inside the console but Microsoft has not confirmed that to be true. The console?s rumored to cost $300 when it hits shelves in late 2013 but expect for that price to be a bit more when it comes out. The Xbox 720 is believed to be far smaller, cheaper, and come with 3-D gaming capability and built in Kinect compared to the Xbox 360 when it hits shelves in 2013. The built-in Kinect or Kinect 2.0 is reported to be able to track up to four players and read minute movements right down to your fingers. The Xbox 720 will for a fact have an HDMI port, USB 3.0 port(s) and play in 1080p just like the PlayStation 4 and also have DVR functionality which may or may not be in the PlayStation 4.

A controversial rumor centered around the Xbox 720 like the PlayStation 4 is that the 720 is rumored to not be able to play used games because of a concept of the new Xbox demanding an always-on internet connection. Concerning the specs of the Xbox 720, the console is rumored to have 8GB RAM and come with a 16-core CPU more powerful than any current gaming PC so now Xbox gamers may not have to deal with PC elitists continuously taunting them about having a better gaming system at least for a couple years. The console is also speculated that it will contain an AMD Fusion chip possibly the ?DX11-capable Krishna APU?. There are rumors of the console having a 7000-series AMD GPU allowing for greater power efficiency (and less noise) during media playback and capable of producing 1080p resolution images and running at 60fps while handling the processing overheads required for 3D as well. On a side note for Blu-ray lovers, the Xbox 720 will be able to play Blu-ray discs except for a ?slim-version? of the console which will be download only meaning that there is a possibility of the console coming out in multiple versions just like the Xbox 360 Slim did with its 4 GB and 250 GB versions.

You have now reached the end of the article and I hoped you found it to be very informative and helped you in figuring out what to expect from this year?s consoles and maybe even influenced your decision on which console to buy. I don?t know about you but I?m thinking this is going to be one of the biggest years in gaming ever and only wish I had more money so I could get all the consoles coming out this year. Once again, I hoped you enjoyed reading this article and will want to read more articles to come from me thank you and Godspeed.
